Cortem PYN-SPYN Ex Plugs and Sockets 16 A to 125 A

Description

Interlocked Ex plugs and sockets from 16 A to 125 A for gas group IIC

The Cortem PYN and SPYN series are explosion-protected sockets (PYN) and plugs (SPYN) rated 16 A, 32 A, 63 A and 125 A, with Ex db eb and Ex tb protection on the socket and Ex eb and Ex tb on the plug, tested for operation down to -60 °C. The range covers two-pole plus earth, three-pole plus earth and three-pole plus neutral plus earth versions from 50 V to a maximum of 690 Vac.

The 16 A and 32 A sockets contain an interlocked disconnect switch with the plug fitted beneath: the circuit is made and broken inside an explosion-proof chamber, so it is only energised after the SPYN plug is fully inserted and can only be withdrawn once the circuit is open. The 63 A and 125 A models carry an automatic circuit breaker to cope with high loads. All SPYN plugs also fit normal industrial sockets to IEC/EN 60309-2, while the sockets are built so that industrial plugs cannot be inserted.

Dimensions and code selection

Codes are built from the series (PYN socket, SPYN plug), the number of poles (2, 3 or 4 meaning 3P+N), the current (16, 32, 63, 125) and a letter for the voltage, for example PYN316R for a 16 A three-pole socket at 380/415 V. The datasheet lists voltage letters such as V (20-25 V), G (100-130 V), B (200-250 V), R (380-415 V), N (480-500 V), RR (440 V) and NN (690 V) with colour-coded lock rings that follow IEC/EN 60309-2.

Model Dimensions A x B x C (mm) and entry Weight (kg)
PYN..16.. 90 x 165 x 135, entry 3/4 inch NPT 1.7
PYN..32.. 120 x 240 x 175, entry 1 inch NPT 2.1
SPYN..16.. 66 x 116, entry 3/4 inch NPT 0.3

Cable glands, spares and what to confirm

Accessories listed by Cortem include NAV5SNB, NAV32IB and NAV40IB nickel-plated brass cable glands, PLG3I and PLG4I caps, and replacement coloured bayonet rings. Confirm the supply voltage and frequency (440 V, 50 Hz is outside the IEC 60309-2 scheme), the number of poles, the cable diameter and gland type, the temperature class for the ambient, and whether matching plugs are needed with each socket.

About brand

Cortem is an Italian manufacturer of electrical equipment for environments with a risk of explosion and fire. Cortem S.p.A., the main company of Cortem Group, was founded in 1968 in Villesse, Italy, and the group today supplies industrial plants, offshore platforms, refineries and shipyards with certified products for hazardous areas.

Explosion-protected product range

The catalogue covers junction boxes in aluminium, stainless steel and GRP, control and command stations, metal cable glands and connectors, plugs and sockets, LED floodlights, linear and high-bay luminaires, hand lamps, signalling and obstruction lights, and weatherproof series equipment. Products are certified to ATEX and IECEx, with UKEX and other schemes available according to the model.

Applications and documentation

Typical sectors named by the company include oil and gas, chemical and pharmaceutical plants, mining, shipbuilding and traditional and green energy. Each product family has a datasheet with the marking, zones, temperature classes and certificate numbers, so the equipment can be matched to a hazardous area classification before ordering.

Sourcing through Seven Star LLC

Seven Star LLC supplies Cortem products to customers in Oman and the GCC and quotes against the model code, zone and certificate requirement.
