Types of equipment in this category

Combination units bring a drench shower and an eye or eye/face wash together on one stand, with plumbed or self-contained versions. Hughes tank showers carry their own water supply in an insulated tank for remote sites without mains water. Tempered and cooled units, including Hughes designs for desert conditions, keep flushing water within the tepid range that the standards require, even where pipes are exposed to strong sun. Laboratory eyewash and face wash units from Speakman mount on benches or walls, and freeze-protected and explosion-proof versions serve hazardous areas. Portable eyewash and decontamination units cover temporary work areas.

How to select safety showers and eyewash

Check compliance with ANSI Z358.1 or EN 15154: flow rates, 15 minutes of tepid water, location within 10 seconds of the hazard and clear signage. Decide between plumbed, self-contained and tank units based on the water supply. In GCC conditions, plan for water heating from sun on exposed pipes and choose cooled or shaded designs. Consider hazardous area ratings, alarm and flow switches, materials for corrosive atmospheres and accessibility.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does ANSI Z358.1 require?
Among other points, flushing for 15 minutes with tepid water, a minimum flow rate for showers and eyewash, location within 10 seconds of the hazard on the same level, and weekly activation testing.
What is tepid water?
The standard defines it as between 16 and 38 °C. Water hotter than this can scald and encourages people to stop flushing too early.
Why do showers in the GCC need cooling?
Water in exposed pipes and tanks can heat well above 38 °C in summer. Cooled or insulated units, buried supply lines and recirculation keep the water within the tepid range.
When is a tank shower used?
On remote sites, wellheads and pipelines without a reliable mains water supply. The tank stores enough water for a full 15-minute flush.
What should I send for a quotation?
The model, or water supply type, ambient conditions, standard required, hazardous area rating, alarm needs and quantity.
