The Zebra ZT421 is the wide-format member of the ZT400 industrial printer series. Where the ZT411 stops at 4.09 in., the ZT421 prints up to 6.6 in. (168 mm) wide, which suits large shipping and pallet labels, equipment data plates, drum and chemical hazard labels and tags with several barcodes or graphics.

Wide labels without a larger machine class

Both ZT400 models use the same operating concept: a metal print mechanism, side-loading media path, 4.3 in. colour touch display, ARM Cortex A7 processor, 256 MB RAM and 512 MB Flash, Link-OS and thermal transfer or direct thermal printing. Door and mechanism lights illuminate the supplies path, and the printhead and platen can be replaced without tools.

The wide platform handles media web widths from 2.00 in. (51 mm) to 7.0 in. (178 mm) in tear and cutter modes and up to 6.75 in. (171 mm) in peel and rewind modes, with ribbon from 2.00 to 6.85 in. (174 mm). Resolution is 203 dpi (8 dots/mm) or 300 dpi (12 dots/mm); the ZT421 specification does not list 600 dpi.

Sensing, media handling and software

Dual transmissive and reflective sensors adjust from 0.06 in. to 4.31 in. from the inside media edge, which covers the wider web. The sheet gives gap (2 to 4 mm), notch (6 mm by 3 mm) and hole (3 mm) standards and a black-mark length of 2.5 to 11.5 mm with at least 9.5 mm width. Rewind internally rewinds a full roll on a 3 in. core or peels and rewinds liner, and the front-mount cutter works under software control (not with rewind or peel).

ZPL II and EPL are resident, and the Link-OS operating system supports Zebra DNA tools for configuration and monitoring. Printhead element-out detection and print-quality alerts help maintenance planning on long labelling lines.

Choosing between the ZT411 and ZT421

Choose the ZT421 when the label or tag is wider than 4.09 in., or when a 6.6 in. print area replaces two narrow passes. If every label fits within 4.09 in., the ZT411 is the narrower alternative and offers a 600 dpi option.
