Selectarc UP EB3 EB3R 2.25Cr-1Mo Submerged Arc Wire

Description

2.25Cr-1Mo wire with restricted trace elements

The Selectarc UP EB3 is a chromium-molybdenum solid wire for submerged arc welding of creep-resisting steels with 2.25% Cr and 1% Mo. It is classified AWS A5.23 EB3R and ISO 24598-A S S CrMo2, and is rated by Selectarc for service temperatures up to 600 °C with a good bead appearance.

The R suffix denotes restricted residual elements. The data sheet limits phosphorus and sulphur to 0.010% and arsenic, tin and antimony to 0.005% each, the elements that drive temper embrittlement in Cr-Mo welds held for long periods at operating temperature. Main applications named are the petrochemical and chemical industries.

P22, F22 and grade 22 plate

Selectarc lists EN 10CrMo9-10, 12CrMo9-10 and the cast grade G-17CrMo9-10, and the ASTM materials A182 F22 forgings, A199 and A200 T21 / T22 tube, A213 T22, A217 WC9 castings, A234 WP22 fittings, A335 P22 pipe and A387 Gr 21 and 22 plate.

2.25Cr-1Mo is a workhorse alloy for hydrotreater and hydrocracker reactors, high-temperature hydrogen piping, heater tubes and steam lines. Thick-walled reactor shells and nozzles are typical submerged arc applications, and the restricted trace element levels of an R-grade wire support the low temper-embrittlement factors that refinery specifications often impose on weld metal, frequently expressed through the Bruscato X-factor.

Welding and heat-treatment considerations

Cr-Mo deposits are hardenable and require preheat, controlled interpass temperature and post-weld heat treatment as defined by the governing code and qualified procedure. Typical industry values for 2.25Cr-1Mo are a preheat of around 150 to 200 °C and PWHT in the range of about 680 to 720 °C, but these are general guidance only; always follow the approved WPS.

The final weld metal analysis and toughness depend on the flux, so qualify UP EB3 with UP BF10 or another approved flux. Where step-cooling tests are specified, confirm that the qualified combination has been tested accordingly. Keep the flux dry, and avoid excessive heat input, which coarsens the microstructure and lowers impact values after PWHT.

Hydrogen-service equipment adds further checks, such as hardness limits on weld and heat-affected zone and, for some reactors, dehydrogenation heat treatment before cooling to ambient. Agree these requirements with the end user before qualification so that the wire and flux lot used in the test matches the production supply.

About brand

Selectarc is a French manufacturer of welding and brazing filler metals, headquartered in Grandvillars, France. Its welding activity began in 1952 with Selectarc Industrie, a plant making covered electrodes, and the business is the welding and brazing division of the family group Viellard Migeon & Compagnie. In 2025 Framatome took a 40% stake in the company.

Selectarc welding and brazing products

The welding range covers covered electrodes for carbon, low-alloy, stainless and nickel-base steels, MIG and TIG wires, flux-cored wires and hardfacing products, with brazing alloys made at the former Reboud-Roche foundry. Selectarc lists the nuclear, defence and aerospace industries among its key markets, and welding production is concentrated at its Grandvillars site, which also houses the research laboratory.

Ordering Selectarc filler metals: what we need

Give the product name, for example Selectarc Ni625, and the AWS or ISO classification in your procedure, the diameter and length, and the quantity. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier in Muscat, checks the grade against the Selectarc technical data sheet and can provide the data sheet and the certificates issued with the order on request.
