Bray Series 54 Inductive Proximity Sensors for Valves

Description

Non-contact open and closed indication in place of mechanical switches

The Bray Series 54 is a family of inductive proximity sensors that provide position indication for quarter-turn valves. Two independent sensors give open and closed signals, and because the sensing is non-contact there is no mechanical wear and no switch welding, arcing or sparking. The housing is hermetically sealed, maintenance free and resistant to shock, vibration, UV and corrosion, and the sensor mounts directly on VDI/VDE 3845 actuators, which gives a smaller actuator profile than a conventional switch box.

Bray splits the family into general service (extreme low profile, 2-wire or 3-wire), industrial service (compact, with 3-wire PNP, AC/DC or AS-i interface outputs), and hazardous location (intrinsically safe NAMUR or a non-sparking 2-wire design). Choosing a model is therefore a matter of output type, connection style and activator rather than a single part number.

AS-i, hazardous-area and washdown options

The AS-i versions let up to 62 devices share one two-wire network that powers the sensor and low-power solenoids, cutting junction boxes and cabling, and give solenoid coil health status. A Y-connector and S-connector reduce site cable needs by carrying power and signal for the sensor and the solenoid on a single cable.

For harsh environments Bray offers the non-sparking sensor with a stainless steel impact shield, removable terminal block, captive cover bolts and IP69K rating for high-temperature, high-pressure washdown. The intrinsically safe NAMUR sensors suit classified zones when connected through the right barrier. Activator kits fit Bray Series 92/93 sizes 63 to 210 (imperial) and 63 to 255 (metric) and all Series 98 actuators; kits are listed by part number such as 54063A, 54063B and 54063C in the manual.

Choosing a sensor and what to confirm

Pick the general service sensor for light indoor and outdoor duty, the industrial one where AS-i, AC/DC or a temperature to 100 deg C is needed, and the hazardous-location models for intrinsically safe or non-sparking installations. Please confirm the actuator model and size for the activator kit, supply voltage, output type, connector or cable gland style, and the certificate required for the area.

Model Output Class
540001 3-wire PNP, 10-30 V DC Industrial
540005 AS-i interface plus output Industrial
540004 AC/DC, 20-253 V AC Industrial
540003 NAMUR IS, 8 V Hazardous location
540021 / 540022 3-wire PNP / 2-wire DC General service

How the Bray Series 54 works

Each sensor sits near a metal activator on the valve shaft. When the activator moves into range, the sensor changes its output state. Two sensors give the open and the closed signal. Nothing touches, so nothing wears.

About brand

Bray valves are a familiar sight on water, HVAC and general process lines, mostly as rubber-lined butterfly valves with an actuator bolted on top. Bray International, founded in 1986 in Houston, USA, makes butterfly valves, ball valves and the pneumatic and electric actuators that drive them. Seven Star LLC sources and supplies Bray valves and actuators for plants and building services in Oman, including the Series 30/31 and Series 70 listed here.

Bray valves and actuators listed here

Series 30 and Series 31 are the resilient-seated butterfly valves: Series 30 is the wafer body and Series 31 the lug body. They are used for on/off and throttling duty on water, air and other fluids compatible with the seat. The Series 70 is Bray's electric actuator for quarter-turn valves, ordered by torque size and supply voltage, with on/off or modulating control.

Ordering Bray butterfly valves: what we need

For a valve, send the series, size, wafer or lug body, body, disc and seat materials, flange standard and operator type (lever, gear or actuator). For a Series 70 actuator, send the torque size from the nameplate, voltage, and whether it is on/off or modulating. A nameplate photo covers most of this. GCC water projects often specify the seat and disc materials, so quote them exactly.
