SKF CMSS 2200 Industrial Accelerometer, Side Exit
Description
Overview
The SKF CMSS 2200 is a general-purpose, low-profile industrial accelerometer with a side-exit two-pin MIL-C-5015 connector. SKF positions it as a rugged, economical sensor for permanent vibration monitoring on rotating machinery, and the official catalogue describes it as suitable for use with SKF on-line surveillance systems, protection systems and portable data collectors. Its 100 mV/g sensitivity, 80 g peak measurement range and hermetically sealed 316L stainless steel case make the SKF CMSS 2200 a practical default choice when a plant wants one sensor type that fits pumps, motors, fans and gearboxes alike.
Seven Star LLC supplies the SKF CMSS 2200 to maintenance and reliability teams in Oman and the wider GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. Our instrumentation engineers help customers confirm the right mounting variant, cable and connector before an order is placed, which matters on retrofit projects where clearance above a bearing housing is limited and a top-exit sensor simply will not fit.
Measurement Principle
As general engineering background, an industrial accelerometer of this type uses a piezoelectric sensing element loaded by a seismic mass. When the machine surface vibrates, the mass applies a varying force to the crystal, which produces a charge proportional to acceleration. Built-in electronics convert that charge into a low-impedance voltage signal riding on a DC bias, so the sensor can drive long cable runs to a monitoring system. The SKF CMSS 2200 datasheet specifies a 12 V DC bias output voltage, an output impedance below 100 Ω and a power requirement of 18 to 30 V DC with a constant current diode of 2 to 10 mA (4 mA recommended).
Because the signal is acceleration, it is naturally sensitive to the higher-frequency content generated by rolling element bearing defects, gear mesh and lubrication problems, while velocity and displacement can be derived by integration in the monitoring system. SKF quotes a frequency range of 1.0 to 5 000 Hz within ±10% and 0.7 to 10 000 Hz within ±3 dB, a mounted resonance of at least 22 kHz and transverse sensitivity of 5% of axial or less. In practice this means the SKF CMSS 2200 covers the usual band for both overall vibration trending and spectrum-based fault diagnosis on standard industrial machines.
Engineering Design of the SKF CMSS 2200
The SKF CMSS 2200 housing is machined from 316L stainless steel and hermetically sealed, which gives the sensor good resistance to humidity, wash-down and corrosive plant atmospheres. The side exit keeps the overall height low: the catalogue drawing shows a body length of 53 mm, a width of 25 mm and an overall height of about 40 mm including the captive socket head mounting screw. The sensor weighs 145 g, mounts in any orientation and uses a captive mounting bolt supplied in 1/4-28, M6 × 1 or M8 × 1.25 form, with a recommended mounting torque of 3.4 Nm. A separate CMSS 2200-M8 version is offered for M8 mounting threads.
Electrically, pin A carries signal and power and pin B is common; the case is isolated and internally shielded, and SKF specifies reverse polarity wiring protection. For cabling, SKF recommends two-conductor shielded cable with a fluorine-based polymer jacket of about 100 pF/m, such as the CMAC 5209 family, and the CMSS 908-MD magnetic base where temporary mounting is needed. The mating connector is a two-pin IP 68 type with a locking collar or twist lock. Note that SKF states this accelerometer is not recommended for hazardous environments, so classified areas need an intrinsically safe sensor instead.
Key Features
The main technical strengths of the SKF CMSS 2200, as published by SKF, are summarised below.
- A standard 100 mV/g sensitivity, held to ±10% at 25 °C, lets the sensor work with most on-line monitoring systems and portable data collectors without rescaling.
- The 80 g peak measurement range with 1% amplitude linearity covers normal running vibration on pumps, fans, motors and gearboxes.
- A side-exit MIL-C-5015 two-pin connector keeps the profile low on machines with limited clearance and helps avoid cable fouling.
- The hermetically sealed 316L stainless steel case resists corrosion in humid or wash-down areas.
- Exceptional bias voltage stability at elevated temperatures and low noise are stated design goals, with an operating range of –50 to +120 °C.
- Captive mounting bolts in 1/4-28, M6 × 1 or M8 × 1.25 are provided so that installation does not depend on loose hardware.
- Reverse polarity protection and a case-isolated, internally shielded design reduce wiring errors and ground-loop noise.
- Vibration and shock limits of 500 g and 5 000 g peak give margin against handling and transient impacts.
Industrial Applications
SKF lists power generation, pulp and paper, mineral processing, food and beverage, metals, automation and water and wastewater among the industries where the SKF CMSS 2200 is commonly deployed. In Oman those duties translate into cooling water and seawater intake pumps at power and desalination plants, booster and transfer pumps on municipal water networks, fans and blowers in cement and mineral plants, and conveyor drives in the ports of Sohar, Duqm and Salalah. On such balance-of-plant machinery the SKF CMSS 2200 gives a permanently mounted measurement point that a route-based programme or an on-line system can read in exactly the same way every time.
For GCC oil and gas facilities, the SKF CMSS 2200 is best suited to non-hazardous areas such as utility buildings, water treatment packages, HVAC plant rooms and workshop machinery, while Zone-classified process areas call for an ATEX or IECEx certified sensor. Seven Star LLC supplies the sensor together with mounting hardware and cabling advice from Muscat, and can combine it with portable tools already used by reliability teams, such as the SKF Microlog Analyzer AX vibration data collector and the SKF TKSA 41 laser shaft alignment tool, so that measurement points and corrective actions follow one consistent approach. Where a machine also needs a velocity-output transducer wired to a protection rack, the sensor can sit alongside devices such as the Bently Nevada 190501 Velomitor CT velocity transducer.

About brand
SKF, founded in 1907 in Gothenburg, Sweden, is best known for rolling bearings, seals and lubrication systems, and it also makes the tools maintenance crews use to mount, align and monitor rotating equipment. Seven Star LLC lists SKF bearings, maintenance tools and condition monitoring instruments and supplies them by full designation to plants and workshops in Oman.
SKF bearings and maintenance tools listed here
Four items show the spread of the range: the 6206-2RS1 deep groove ball bearing with rubber seals on both sides, the TIH 030m induction heater for mounting bearings, the TKSA 41 laser shaft alignment tool, and the Microlog Analyzer AX (CMXA 80) vibration data collector. Other SKF bearings can be quoted from the full designation.
Ordering SKF bearings and tools: what we need
An SKF bearing designation is read in three parts: the basic number, then suffixes for seals or shields, cage, clearance and tolerance. Send it complete, for example 6206-2RS1/C3, because the suffixes change the part. For tools and instruments, send the model designation and say which accessories or kits you need. If markings are worn off, give us bore, outside diameter and width in millimeters. We answer SKF spare parts inquiries from all GCC countries.
