Fixed-pressure poppet check valve for 1/4 in. tubing

The Swagelok SS-4C-1 is a C series poppet check valve in 316 stainless steel with 1/4 in. Swagelok tube fitting ends on both sides. It allows flow in one direction only and closes when the inlet pressure falls below its fixed cracking pressure, which for the -1 version is 1 psi (0.07 bar). Typical uses are controlling back flow in general-service and high-purity instrument lines, sample systems and gas panels.

In this design a spring pushes a poppet against an O-ring seat, and the two body halves are sealed by an O-ring. Swagelok states that every C series valve is factory tested for cracking and reseal performance, and that fixed-pressure valves are cycled six times before testing, with a maximum seat leak rate of 1 std cm³/min of nitrogen.

Choosing the cracking pressure and options

C series valves are offered with nominal cracking pressures of 1/3, 1, 10 and 25 psi (0.03, 0.07, 0.69 and 1.8 bar); the cracking pressure designator is added to the basic number, so SS-4C-1/3 or SS-4C-10 are the same valve with a different spring. For 1 psi and 1/3 psi valves, reseal occurs with back pressure up to 12 psi and 20 psi respectively. Check valves are for directional flow control only and must never be used as code safety relief devices.

Other seal materials such as Buna N, ethylene propylene and fluorocarbon are available by inserting a designator into the part number, and an optional inlet gasket helps on 2C and 4C valves where pressure surges or pulses could dislodge the O-ring. For adjustable cracking pressure use the CA or CPA series, and for working pressures up to 6000 psig see the CH series high-pressure check valve.
