SKF TKSA 41 Laser Shaft Alignment Tool

Description

Overview

SKF TKSA 41 is an advanced laser shaft alignment system built for maintenance teams who need accurate, repeatable alignment of horizontal rotating machinery without a specialist training course. It combines two wireless measurement units, large detectors and powerful line lasers with a 5.6 inch colour touchscreen display unit, so a technician can clamp the brackets, rotate the shafts and read the vertical and horizontal corrections directly on screen. Misalignment is one of the most common root causes of premature bearing, seal and coupling failure, and a dependable alignment tool pays for itself quickly in reduced downtime and lower spare parts consumption.

Seven Star LLC supplies the SKF TKSA 41 to industrial customers in Oman and across the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. The kit is relevant to oil and gas facilities, power and desalination plants, water utilities, cement and mining operations and the many pump, fan and compressor trains that keep them running. Our team can help you confirm that the shaft diameters, coupling heights and machine layouts you work with fall inside the limits published in the SKF datasheet before you order.

Measurement Principle

The SKF TKSA 41 uses a laser and detector measurement method. One measurement unit is mounted on the shaft of each machine, across the coupling. Each unit projects a line laser onto a 29 mm CCD detector in the opposite unit. As both shafts are rotated together, the position of the laser line on each detector changes in proportion to the offset and angular error between the two shaft centrelines. The display unit records these readings at several shaft positions and calculates the angular and parallel misalignment in both the vertical and horizontal planes. An inclinometer with a range of plus or minus 0.5 degrees tracks the rotation angle of the heads.

A key advantage of the SKF TKSA 41 is the free measurement mode. Conventional three position alignment expects readings at fixed clock positions, which is difficult when a guard, a pipe or a structural member blocks the shaft. With free measurement the technician can start at any angle and finish with an angular sweep of only 90 degrees, and the system still resolves the alignment condition. The device also supports the classic three position method at 9, 12 and 3 o’clock, an automatic measurement mode that takes a reading when the heads reach the correct position, and a soft foot check. The published system measuring distance is 0.07 to 4 m, and measuring errors are below 0.5 percent plus or minus 5 micrometres.

Engineering Design of the SKF TKSA 41

Each measurement unit is housed in a 20 percent glass filled polycarbonate body measuring 120 x 90 x 36 mm and weighing 220 g, with a rechargeable LiPo battery that gives up to 16 hours of operating time. The units communicate with the display unit by Bluetooth 4.0 LE, and wired connection through the supplied USB cables is also possible. Because the link is wireless, the technician can stand in a safe position and operate the display while the shafts are turned, instead of managing cables that can snag on rotating equipment. The units carry a class 2 line laser and are rated IP 54.

The SKF TKSA 41 display unit is a 205 x 140 x 60 mm high impact PC/ABS device with an overmoulded housing, a 5.6 inch colour resistive touchscreen and up to 8 hours of operation at full backlight. It stores a machine library, reads QR codes to identify machines quickly and creates an automatic report after each alignment. Reports can include notes and pictures from the built-in camera and can be exported as PDF files. Mounting is by two V-brackets with 400 mm chains and 150 mm threaded rods that fit shafts from 20 to 150 mm in diameter, extendable to 300 mm with optional extension chains. The standard rods allow a coupling height up to 105 mm, and the supplied extension rods raise this to 195 mm.

Key Features of the SKF TKSA 41

The following capabilities define the SKF TKSA 41 in daily maintenance work.

  • Wireless measurement units improve handling and allow alignment of hard to reach machines from a safe position.
  • Free measurement allows the first reading at any shaft angle and a finish after a sweep of only 90 degrees.
  • Automatic measurement detects the head position and records a reading when the heads reach the correct angle, which frees both hands for the work.
  • Live view shows horizontal and vertical correction values while the technician adjusts the machine feet.
  • Automatic PDF reports can be customised with notes and pictures from the built-in camera.
  • A machine library gives an overview of all machines and their alignment reports, and QR codes simplify machine identification.
  • Soft foot measurement helps identify distorted machine bases before shims are changed.
  • A calibration certificate with two years of validity is supplied with the kit, which is delivered in a rugged SKF carrying case.

Industrial Applications

The SKF TKSA 41 suits any horizontal rotating machine train in which two shafts are joined by a coupling. In oil and gas facilities in the Sultanate of Oman, typical uses include motor to pump alignment on export, injection and transfer pumps, fan and blower trains in process areas, and auxiliary compressors. Power stations and desalination plants along the Batinah coast depend on well aligned boiler feed pumps, cooling water pumps and seawater booster sets, where a failed bearing can reduce output. Water utilities, district cooling plants and industrial zones such as Sohar and Salalah use the tool on circulation pumps, gearboxes and conveyor drives.

With the SKF TKSA 41, planned alignment checks are most valuable after a motor replacement, a coupling change, a baseplate repair or a pipework modification, and as a routine part of a reliability programme. Because the SKF TKSA 41 produces a report after each job, maintenance planners can document the before and after condition of a machine and use that history when investigating recurring failures. Seven Star LLC supports regional customers with the supply of the SKF TKSA 41 and advice on matching kit contents to local maintenance practice.

About brand
SKF, founded in 1907 in Gothenburg, Sweden, is best known for rolling bearings, seals and lubrication systems, and it also makes the tools maintenance crews use to mount, align and monitor rotating equipment. Seven Star LLC lists SKF bearings, maintenance tools and condition monitoring instruments and supplies them by full designation to plants and workshops in Oman.

SKF bearings and maintenance tools listed here

Four items show the spread of the range: the 6206-2RS1 deep groove ball bearing with rubber seals on both sides, the TIH 030m induction heater for mounting bearings, the TKSA 41 laser shaft alignment tool, and the Microlog Analyzer AX (CMXA 80) vibration data collector. Other SKF bearings can be quoted from the full designation.

Ordering SKF bearings and tools: what we need

An SKF bearing designation is read in three parts: the basic number, then suffixes for seals or shields, cage, clearance and tolerance. Send it complete, for example 6206-2RS1/C3, because the suffixes change the part. For tools and instruments, send the model designation and say which accessories or kits you need. If markings are worn off, give us bore, outside diameter and width in millimeters. We answer SKF spare parts inquiries from all GCC countries.
