Overview

The Masoneilan 36005 Series V-Max is a high-capacity control ball valve from Baker Hughes Masoneilan, and the key word in that description is control. Many high-capacity ball valve designs reach their flow ratings by giving up throttling accuracy, which leaves them suitable for on-off duty but poor at holding a setpoint. The V-Max was engineered the other way round: a V-ported, segmented ball with a patented dual-characterized profile that delivers very high Cv values while keeping an equal percentage flow characteristic and a rangeability the manufacturer states as greater than 500:1. For plants that need big flow and fine control in the same line, that combination is the reason to specify it.

Operating Principle of the Dual-Characterized V-Port Ball

The throttling element in the Masoneilan 36005 is a segmented ball whose edge is contoured into a V shape. As the ball rotates, the V-port opens progressively against a seal ring, so the flow area changes smoothly instead of jumping from closed to a large opening, which is what gives a ball valve its usual poor control resolution at low lift. Baker Hughes describes the profile as dual-characterized: it combines an equal percentage flow characteristic with high capacity, so equal increments of travel give equal percentage changes in flow, and the large straight-through passage keeps pressure losses low when the valve is wide open.

The flow direction of the Masoneilan 36005 is flow to open. The ball is 317 stainless steel with a hard chrome plating, carried on sealed radial ball bearings, and driven through full involute spline connections on the plug, shaft and actuator. Those splines virtually eliminate backlash, which matters for a control valve because dead band between actuator and ball would show up directly as poor loop performance. The Masoneilan 36005 rated capacity ranges from a Cv of 55 on the 1 inch valve to 4,400 on the 12 inch valve.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 36005

The body is cast with an integral bonnet in carbon steel or stainless steel, and it has integrally cast raised-face flanges to ASME Class 150 or 300, so the valve bolts between pipeline flanges without the long tie rods a wafer design needs. Two face-to-face dimensions are offered: the standard construction follows ISA S75.04 and IEC 534-3-2, and a short pattern follows ASME B16.10 for Class 150. The choice lets the same valve platform be matched to the laying length that the piping design calls for.

Three seal ring types let the Masoneilan 36005 be matched to the duty. The MN-7 seal ring, a polymeric reinforced PTFE, provides Class VI shut-off with low friction. A strain-hardened 316 stainless steel seal ring provides Class IV shut-off and, combined with a high-temperature package of metal seal ring, bearings and flexible graphite packing, raises the fluid temperature limit to 316 °C (600 °F) in lubricated service. For harsh duty in sizes 1 to 4 inch, an optional heavy-duty metal seal ring in Nitronic 60 offers bi-directional flow and Class IV shut-off with a 260 °C (500 °F) limit. Replacing a seal ring on the Masoneilan 36005 requires removing only two machine screws on the inlet flange.
