Brand: ABB
ABB S203-C63 Three-pole Miniature Circuit Breaker, C 63 A
Description
Ordered as 2CDS253001R0634, the S203-C63 is a three-pole breaker from the System pro M compact S200 series with a 63 A rating. Overloads are handled thermally and short circuits magnetically, while the C characteristic lets ordinary inrush currents pass without nuisance tripping. ABB gives 6 kA short-circuit capacity to IEC/EN 60898-1, which covers common board duties such as the largest rating of the range, such as a three-phase sub-board incomer.
More low-voltage protection devices are listed under circuit breakers, for example the SACE Tmax XT moulded case breaker range for higher currents.

Selecting the 63 A C-curve
Instantaneous tripping lies in the window of 315 to 630 A, that is 5 to 10 x In, and the tripping time at 5 x In is 0.1 to 30 s. At the 30 C reference temperature the conventional non-tripping current is 71.19 A and the conventional tripping current is 91.35 A (1.13 and 1.45 x In). The permitted operating current falls to 59.4 A at 40 C, 55.6 A at 50 C and 51.4 A at 60 C according to the ABB table. Devices mounted directly side by side need a correction factor: 0.9 for two or three neighbours, 0.8 for four or five and 0.75 for six or more, unless distance pieces are used.
Three-pole use and accessories
A three-pole breaker protects a three-phase feeder with one handle and a common trip. ABB prints 400 V AC (IEC/EN 60898-1) and 440 V AC (IEC/EN 60947-2). ABB lets the breaker be combined with auxiliary and signal contacts, shunt and undervoltage releases, a motor operating device and a DDA 200 RCD block. Allow 52.5 mm of rail width and the busbar slot, which takes busbars of 10 mm2.
Order code and designation
Break S203-C63 down and you get S200, 3 poles, C curve, 63 A. Use 2CDS253001R0634 as the part number in an enquiry or order. Before an order goes out, match the pole count, curve, current, voltage and fault level against the installation drawings and decide about accessories.
Key features of the S203-C63
- Three poles with a common trip, so a fault on one phase disconnects all three and prevents single-phasing of motors and three-phase loads.
- Thermal-magnetic release: a bimetal element for overload and a magnetic coil for short-circuit protection.
- C characteristic for mixed loads with moderate inrush, such as small motors, transformers and lighting circuits with drivers.
- Dual certification to IEC/EN 60898-1 for installation use and IEC/EN 60947-2 for industrial applications.
- DIN rail mounting in a 52.5 mm width, compatible with the System pro M compact accessory family.
B, C or D curve: choosing correctly
| Curve | Magnetic trip range | Typical loads |
|---|---|---|
| B | 3 to 5 x In | Resistive loads, long cable runs, socket circuits |
| C | 5 to 10 x In | General distribution, small motors, lighting with ballasts or drivers |
| D | 10 to 20 x In | Transformers, welding equipment and motors with high starting currents |
When choosing the curve, check that the prospective fault current at the end of the protected cable is high enough to reach the instantaneous range; for this breaker that means at least 630 A to be sure of fast tripping. On long feeders this condition may require a larger cable.
Installation notes
- Snap the breaker onto a 35 mm DIN rail and connect conductors up to 35 mm², tightening the terminals to 2.8 Nm.
- Feed from the top or the bottom terminals as the board layout requires; the S200 allows either.
- Check the fault level at the board: if it exceeds the 6 kA (60898-1) or 10 kA (60947-2) rating, provide upstream back-up protection as shown in ABB’s coordination tables.
- Apply the grouping and temperature correction factors above when the breaker sits in a crowded, warm board.
- Fit the breaker behind a cover or door to reach IP40 at the front.
Boards in Oman and the GCC
Distribution boards in the region frequently operate at internal temperatures well above 30 °C, particularly in outdoor feeder pillars, rooftop plant rooms and site containers. Using ABB’s table, a 63 A breaker carries only 55.6 A at 50 °C, so a feeder designed close to 63 A at reference temperature may trip on a hot afternoon. Size the load or the breaker accordingly, ventilate or shade the enclosure, and leave space between heavily loaded devices. Typical uses include sub-main feeders to apartment and villa boards, supply to air-conditioning condensing units, small pump panels and site temporary power distribution.
For selectivity with an upstream moulded case breaker or fuse, refer to ABB’s coordination tables rather than comparing nominal currents alone, because short-circuit discrimination depends on the let-through energy of each device. Where the S203-C63 feeds downstream miniature breakers of lower rating, check that those devices also trip first for faults on their own circuits.
RFQ checklist
- Order code 2CDS253001R0634 and quantity.
- Prospective short-circuit current at the board.
- Accessories: auxiliary or signal contacts, shunt trip, undervoltage release, motor operator or RCD block.
- Busbars and terminal covers if a complete board row is being built.

About brand
ABB, formed in 1988 and headquartered in Zurich, covers an unusually long stretch of a plant's equipment list, from the flowmeter and analyzer in the field to the drive, breaker and protection relay in the electrical room.
Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier serving Oman and the GCC. Our ABB listing concentrates on measurement and analytics: ABB flowmeters, liquid analysis sensors and systems, level and pressure instruments. It also includes valve actuators, low voltage circuit breakers, ABB drives, soft starters and protection relays.
