HIWIN MGN-C Miniature Linear Guideway Block and Rail

The HIWIN MGN-C is the standard narrow block of the MG miniature linear guideway series. It is a tiny, light ball guideway with gothic arch contact for equipment where a normal guideway is too large, such as semiconductor and PCB equipment, medical devices, robotics and measuring instruments.

The catalog lists the design features of the MGN series: a tiny and light body, gothic arch contact that sustains loads from all directions with high rigidity and accuracy, ball retainers, and interchangeable types in certain sizes and accuracy grades. Size range and load ratings of the MGN block

The table gives the MGN7 to MGN15 blocks in the standard (C) and long (H) lengths. H is the assembled height, W the block width, L the block length, C and C0 the basic dynamic and static load ratings, then block mass and rail mass per metre. Ordering code, preload and selection

The MG model number gives the size, block type (C standard, H long), special block option, number of blocks per rail, rail length, accuracy, preload, material and end-seal or bottom-seal options. For example MGN12CE2R1600EZ1PMII+SS/U/EL+RC/-O combines these fields. Lubrication differs by size: MGN15 takes a grease nipple, while MGN7, 9 and 12 are lubricated through the hole at the side of the end cap.

Interchangeable rails and blocks are offered in certain sizes and accuracy grades; the precision is lower than for non-interchangeable sets. Before ordering, confirm the size, block length, accuracy, preload, material treatment, rail length and end distances. MG2 and MG3 blocks should not be taken off the rail unless kept on the block inserts.

Choosing between MGN-C, MGN-H and MGW

The C block is the shortest and lightest. Where load or moment capacity is not enough, the long H block on the same rail increases the dynamic and static load ratings without changing the rail or the assembled height, as the table above shows for each size. Where the main problem is rolling moment, for example when a single rail carries an overhanging load, the wide MGW series is the better path because the wider rail and block resist tilting. Using two parallel rails, or two blocks on one rail, also raises moment stiffness considerably.

Preload and accuracy in practice

Clearance preload classes give the lightest running force and suit applications where smooth, low-friction motion matters more than stiffness. Light preload removes play and increases rigidity for precision positioning, at the cost of slightly higher friction. Accuracy class should match the precision of the mounting surfaces; a precision-grade guideway on a poorly machined base will not deliver its rated accuracy.

Installation guidance

• Machine the mounting surface flat and clean; remove burrs and dirt before fitting the rail.
• Use a reference edge or shoulder to align the rail, and tighten rail bolts in sequence to the torque given by HIWIN for the screw size.
• Do not remove the block from the rail unless necessary; if you must, use a dummy rail to keep the balls in place on sizes without retainers.
• Check that the block runs smoothly over the full stroke before fitting the moving load.

Lubrication and maintenance

Miniature guideways carry small amounts of lubricant, so regular relubrication is important for life. Where access is difficult, the optional EL auxiliary lubrication module for the sizes listed in the specifications extends maintenance intervals. Seals and end caps should be inspected for damage, and in dusty conditions a protective cover or bellows over the axis helps keep particles out of the raceways.
