Lovato SM1P1000 6.3-10 A Motor Protection Circuit Breaker

Description

Thermal-magnetic motor protection in one 45 mm device

The SM1P1000 is a three-pole motor protection circuit breaker from the Lovato Electric SM series. It combines an adjustable thermal overload release, a fixed magnetic short-circuit release and phase-failure detection in one device, so it can be placed directly upstream of a contactor to build a direct-on-line starter without a separate fuse or overload relay.

The thermal setting covers 6.3 to 10 A, which fits three-phase 400 V motors of a few kilowatts; always set the dial from the nameplate current rather than from the power rating. The magnetic release trips at 13 times the rated current, which is 130 A on this model, as printed on the front of the device. It is operated by a red OFF push button and a black ON push button and fits a 35 mm DIN rail in a modular panel.

Applying and combining the SM1P

Lovato offers 16 adjustment ranges from 0.1 A to 40 A in a device about 45 mm wide, so the right model follows the motor full-load current on the nameplate. The thermal dial is set to that current. For the SM1P1000 the dial range is 6.3 to 10 A.

Rigid connection kits link the breaker to a BF09 to BF25 contactor, for example the BF0910A230, to make a compact starter. Auxiliary contacts, indicator contacts, undervoltage and shunt trips, enclosures and door-coupling handles are accessories in the same series.

What to confirm before ordering

Check the motor full-load current, the supply voltage and prospective short-circuit current against the 400 V figures above, and whether the starter will be mounted in an enclosure or on a DIN rail. Note that the breaking capacity falls sharply above 400 V, so applications at 440 V and higher need a closer check against the breaking table. For another make of motor-protective breaker, see the Eaton PKZM0-1,6/AK, or browse the circuit breakers category.

How the Lovato SM1P1000 works

The breaker has two trip systems. The thermal release follows the motor current over time and trips on a long overload. The magnetic release trips at once on a short circuit. It also trips if one phase is lost. Set the dial to the nameplate current of the motor.

Where the SM1P1000 is used

  • Direct-on-line motor starters
  • Pump and fan motors
  • Conveyor drives
  • Machine control panels
  • Compact modular switchboards

Selection checklist for the SM1P1000

  • Motor current within 6.3 to 10 A
  • Three-phase supply voltage
  • Short-circuit level at the panel
  • Contactor to be fitted below
  • DIN rail space of 45 mm
  • Wire size at the terminals
  • Ambient temperature in the panel
  • Tripping class 10A

Installation, commissioning and maintenance notes for the SM1P1000

Snap the breaker onto the DIN rail above the contactor. Tighten the terminals to 2.5 to 3 Nm. Set the thermal dial to the motor nameplate current. Operate the ON and OFF buttons and test the motor start. Check the terminals at each panel service.
