Danfoss iC2-Micro Frequency Converter 0.37-22 kW

Description

Overview

The Danfoss iC2-Micro is a compact general-purpose frequency converter for motors from 0.37 kW to 22 kW. Danfoss introduced it as the successor to the VLT® Micro Drive FC 51, which has now reached the Limited phase of its lifecycle and is no longer produced. The Danfoss iC2-Micro keeps the small footprint and simple commissioning that made the FC 51 popular in panels and machines, and adds permanent magnet motor control, locked motor detection, torque open loop control and connectivity with the MyDrive® Suite tools.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Danfoss iC2-Micro to panel builders, OEMs and maintenance teams in the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. For plants that still run FC 51 micro drives, we help match the power rating, supply voltage and I/O so the Danfoss iC2-Micro can be fitted as a straightforward replacement.

Operating Principle

Like any voltage-source inverter, the Danfoss iC2-Micro rectifies the incoming 50/60 Hz supply to a DC link and then synthesises a variable-voltage, variable-frequency output for the motor, from 0 to 500 Hz. Varying the output frequency changes the motor speed, so a fan or pump runs only as fast as the process needs, which is where most of the energy saving in variable-torque applications comes from. Ramp times from 0.01 to 3,600 s allow a gentle start that limits mechanical stress and water hammer.

The drive uses VVC+ voltage-vector control and provides efficient open-loop control of permanent magnet motors across the whole power range, as well as induction motors. Overload capacity is 150 % for 60 s every 10 minutes, with 200 % for 1 s at start, which covers the breakaway torque of conveyors and positive displacement pumps. An integrated PID controller allows closed-loop pressure or flow control from a transmitter signal without a separate controller.

Engineering Design of the Danfoss iC2-Micro

The Danfoss iC2-Micro integrates components that often have to be added externally: a control panel with LED display and indicators, a potentiometer for local setpoints, an RFI filter (in the filtered variant), a brake chopper and intelligent cooling. Seven enclosure sizes from MA01c to MA05a cover the range, the smallest measuring 150 × 70 × 143 mm and weighing about 1 kg. Printed circuit boards are coated, no forced air passes over the PCBs, the fan is removable and switched on only when needed, and the smallest single-phase units are cooled naturally without a fan.

Control wiring uses spring-type I/O terminals: five digital inputs and one digital output, pulse input and output, two analog inputs for 0–10 V or 0/4–20 mA, one 0/4–20 mA analog output and one relay output rated 240 V AC, 2 A. An RJ45 port based on RS485 connects the optional remote control panel, which has a 2.0 inch display, multi-language text and parameter copy, or a PC for offline configuration. Drives can be mounted side by side and operate at up to 50 °C without derating.

Key Features

The drive brings these advantages to small motor applications:

  • Designed by Danfoss as the replacement for the VLT Micro Drive FC 51 in existing plants.
  • Permanent magnet motor control in open loop under VVC+ across the whole power range, as well as induction motor control.
  • Integrated brake chopper and PID controller reduce external components and cost.
  • Operation at up to 50 °C without derating suits hot control rooms and outdoor kiosks.
  • Coated PCBs and no forced air over the electronics improve reliability in dusty and humid environments.
  • Spring-type I/O terminals and application set-up wizards shorten installation and commissioning.
  • Two versions, with or without EMC filter, let the buyer match the electrical environment.
  • Side-by-side mounting and compact enclosures save cabinet space.

Industrial Applications

Danfoss names fans, pumps, conveyors and textile machines as the main duties for the Danfoss iC2-Micro. In Oman and the GCC it is a practical choice for ventilation and extraction fans in plant buildings, cooling tower fans, small booster and dosing pumps in water treatment, packaging and bottling conveyors, mixers and agitators, and HVAC equipment in commercial buildings, hospitals and hotels. In larger installations it often works alongside the Danfoss VLT HVAC Drive FC 102 for air handling units and the Danfoss VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 for heavier process duty.

For sites replacing failed FC 51 units, the Danfoss iC2-Micro covers the same supply voltages and power ranges, and Danfoss provides a retrofit tool in MyDrive Assistant. Existing FC 51 accessories such as the Danfoss LCP 12 control panel belong to the older drive, so the optional iC2 remote panel should be specified for the new unit. Seven Star LLC supplies the Danfoss iC2-Micro across Oman, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Kuwait and Bahrain.

About brand
From its headquarters in Nordborg, Denmark, where it was founded in 1933, Danfoss makes the drives, valves and sensors found in pump rooms, chiller plants and cold stores. Its blue VLT frequency converters are probably the most familiar of them. Seven Star LLC lists Danfoss VLT drives, pressure transmitters, refrigeration valves and HVAC control valves, and supplies them to contractors and plant owners in Oman against the exact code number on the label.

Danfoss product families on this page

Three VLT drives are listed, each aimed at a different duty: the VLT HVAC Drive FC 102 for fans and building services, the VLT AQUA Drive FC 202 for water and wastewater pumping, and the VLT AutomationDrive FC 302 for general industrial machinery. The LCP 12 control panel with potentiometer (code number 132B0101) is also listed; Danfoss specifies it for the VLT Micro Drive FC 51. In pressure measurement there are the MBS 3000 general purpose transmitter and the MBS 5100. Valves include the AB-QM pressure independent control valve in DN 15 to DN 250, the EVR 25 servo-operated solenoid valve and the ICV pilot-operated valve for industrial refrigeration.

Where Danfoss equipment is used

District cooling and chilled water plants, air handling units, booster and irrigation pump stations, desalination and wastewater works, ammonia and CO2 refrigeration plants, food storage and marine engine rooms are the usual places. Demand in the GCC is driven largely by cooling and water.

Ordering Danfoss parts: what we need

Every Danfoss product has a code number, and drives also carry a long type code string on the label. Send both. For a drive we need the motor power and current, the mains voltage, enclosure rating, any fieldbus or option card and the filter class. For an MBS transmitter give the pressure span, output signal, pressure connection and electrical connection. For valves give the size, connection type, coil voltage where relevant and the refrigerant or medium.
