The Masoneilan 37002 Model 35 is the heavy duty version of the MiniTork II butterfly control valve, supplied with the Model 35 rotating diaphragm spring actuator and documented in a Baker Hughes instruction manual (Rev. A). MiniTork is described by Baker Hughes as a compact, flangeless butterfly valve designed to reduce dynamic torque, bending of working parts and play. The Model 35 actuator is available in sizes 7 and 9 and drives the valve through a lever and clevis on the shaft, with an optional handwheel mounted on the opposite side of the yoke.

Principle of Operation of the Masoneilan 37002 Model 35

The disk of the Masoneilan 37002 Model 35 turns on a stainless steel monobloc shaft supported by two bearings in the body and by a ball bearing in the support. The ball bearing takes up the axial thrust that pipeline pressure puts on the shaft and keeps the disk centred. Because the body is symmetrical and the disk has reversed blades, the torque on the shaft is symmetrical and fluid can flow in either direction, which is why the manual calls the design low-torque and low-play.

The rotating diaphragm spring actuator can be mounted in air-to-close mode, so the valve opens on air failure, or in air-to-open mode, so the valve closes on air failure. For each action there are four possible actuator positions, and the standard arrangement is parallel to the pipe for the lowest profile. Moving the actuator, changing the action and reversing the limit stop on the lever are all described step by step in the manual, which is useful when a replacement valve has to fit existing air piping.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 37002 Model 35

The long bonnet built into the Masoneilan 37002 Model 35 body gives a large radiant surface that normalises the packing temperature, so a single grade of self-lubricating packing, PTFE fibres braided around a Kevlar core, can be used from -130 degC to +260 degC (-200 degF to +500 degF). The manual warns against insulating the bonnet. Valves with an elastomer sleeve use a hard elastomer sleeve cast on a steel ring, which slips into the body, can withstand negative pressure and high flow rates without a pressure equalising line and needs no bonding to the body.

Standardisation is a practical benefit. Baker Hughes notes that MiniTork valves use standard parts and materials, that emergency repairs can often use parts from any MiniTork of the same size in stock, and that packing and bearings for the same shaft diameter are the same on Camflex, MiniTork and ball valves. The manual lists the 2 to 6 inch disk-and-shaft pin drilling data (a No. 19 drill and a No. 2 taper reamer) and the 8 to 12 inch data (a 1/4 inch drill and a No. 5 reamer), and gives cap screw torques of 4 to 11 daN.m for actuator size 7 and 7 to 10 daN.m for size 9.

The wide packing temperature range extends use to hot services, and the sleeve version is available for corrosive or abrasive fluids and for vacuum conditions.
