Operating Principle

The Masoneilan PXR controls flow with a single plug and a single seat. Its stem and port guided unbalanced trim gives the plug strong support, which keeps the valve stable and controllable throughout its stroke. The seat is a threaded seat ring and the plug is unbalanced, so no balance seals or pilot plugs are needed to achieve shutoff; fewer soft parts means fewer components to stock and replace at a turnaround.

Trim is interchangeable inside the same body. Baker Hughes offers hardened full-capacity, reduced-capacity and low-area-capacity trims so that one body size can serve a range of flow requirements, in contoured or V-port form with a linear or equal percent characteristic. Flow is flow-to-open as standard. Tight shutoff to ANSI/FCI 70-2 Class IV or Class V is standard, and the valve can be sized and selected with the Masoneilan ValvStream Sizing and Selection Program.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan PXR

The Masoneilan PXR is a globe-style valve in sizes from 0.5 to 6 inches (DN 15 to DN 150), rated ASME Class 150 or 300 and PN 20 or PN 40, with face-to-face dimensions to ISA 75.08.01 or EN 558-1 (DIN 3202 F1). A standard bolted bonnet covers −29°C to 232°C (−20°F to 450°F) with braided PTFE or FE packing, and up to 350°C (662°F) with graphite or FE packing. Body and bonnet materials include ASTM A216 WCC and WCB carbon steel, A351 CF8M and CF3M stainless steel, A494 CW-12MW (Hastelloy C276) and A494 M-35-1 (Monel 400), with equivalent EN grades listed.

Packing choices are PTFE, graphite and a fugitive-emission (FE) packing option, with a bellows-seal design available up to 4-inch valves. Actuation is by Masoneilan Model 57/58 spring-diaphragm actuators as standard, with Model 87/88 actuators and a handwheel as options. Baker Hughes groups positioners into three levels, from essential control only, through position feedback with no local interface, to advanced on-line diagnostics, so the level of digitalization can follow budget and operational complexity.

Baker Hughes positions the Masoneilan PXR for chemical, power generation, refining, petrochemical, and midstream and upstream oil and gas plants, with typical duties including steam turbine systems, condensers, cooling towers, reactors, distillation, hydroprocessing, compression, dehydration, refrigeration, liquefaction and regasification. In Oman that translates to utility steam and cooling-water loops at power and desalination stations, process control on chemical and petrochemical units, and general-purpose loops in gas processing plants where Class 150 and 300 globe valves are the workhorse of the control system.
