ROC827 Expandable Remote Operations Controller

Description

Overview

The ROC827 is the expandable member of Emerson’s ROC800-Series remote operations controllers. Where its sibling offers a fixed nine-slot backplane, the ROC827 starts with a compact base unit and grows by adding expansion I/O backplanes, a modular approach that suits remote sites whose requirements change over the life of the asset. The official product data sheet states that the ROC827 is expandable from three up to 27 module slots, and that the family supports flow computation, Proportional, Integral and Derivative control loops, logic sequencing control and up to 12 meter runs.

As the official trusted supplier for Emerson in Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the ROC827 Expandable Remote Operations Controller together with the end caps, expansion backplanes, power input modules and I/O cards that make up a complete assembly. Engineers in Muscat, Sohar and Salalah can plan a station in stages, buy the base hardware first and add capacity later from the same source.

Working Principle

The ROC827 acts as the brain of a remote station. Its Series 2 CPU executes firmware stored in flash, reads the modules on the backplane, and writes results to battery-backed memory. According to the data sheet, the Series 2 architecture raises the user C memory and the CPU speed, lets AC I/O, Advanced Pulse, HART and MVS modules work in any I/O slot, and enlarges the history database to 240 points in 13 segments. Each segment can archive on its own time interval and contract hour, which is useful when a station reports both hourly and daily values.

For measurement, the ROC800 platform supports up to 12 gas meter runs using AGA or ISO calculations for orifice, turbine, ultrasonic and Coriolis meters, enabled through optional license keys. Runs that share parameters are grouped into stations so that contract hours and gas data are configured once. For control, engineers use Function Sequence Tables in ROCLINK 800 or, with a license key, IEC 61131-3 programs built in DS800 Development Suite software. Role-based access and user account authentication protect the configuration, and password encryption is available from firmware version 3.90.

Engineering Design of the ROC827

The mechanical concept of the ROC827 is a base backplane flanked by two end caps, with up to four identical expansion backplanes inserted between them. The base unit is 93.2 mm wide and weighs 770 g with its CPU, each expansion backplane adds 93.2 mm and 517 g, and each end cap adds 27.1 mm and 160 g. Height is 241 mm and depth is 174 mm, with an extra 19 mm for cables. With four expansion backplanes the published figures add up to roughly 520 mm of width and 3.2 kg before modules are installed.

Power draw also scales with the build. A base ROC827 needs 104 mA on a 12 Vdc power input module, 110 mA on 24 Vdc and 115 mA on 30 Vdc, and every expansion backplane adds between 12.5 and 25 mA depending on the module. The housing is PC/ABS with removable wire channel covers and mounts on 35 mm DIN rail. Modules are secured by two front captive screws, and several are hot-swappable or hot-pluggable, so a failed card can be replaced while the controller stays powered and the replacement inherits the previous configuration.

Key Features

The ROC827 is selected when future growth matters as much as present capability. The following points come from the official data sheet.

  • Expands from three to 27 module slots by adding up to four six-slot expansion I/O backplanes to the base unit.
  • Supports up to 12 meter runs and up to 12 stations with AGA or ISO calculations enabled through license keys.
  • Offers analog, discrete, relay, pulse, AC, RTD, thermocouple, HART, MVS and WirelessHART interface modules, all isolated.
  • Provides up to six communication ports, with ROC Plus and Modbus protocols and up to six simultaneous ROC Plus connections over Ethernet.
  • Stores 450 events, 450 alarms and 35 days of hourly records per API Chapter 21.1 in addition to the configurable history database.
  • Includes extensive short-circuit protection that eliminates fuses on the I/O and communication modules.
  • Runs from 12, 24 or 30 Vdc power input modules and economizes power through internal 3.3 volt electronics.
  • Supports an optional ROC Keypad Display so local users can view and change parameters without a laptop.

Industrial Applications

A ROC827 is typically specified for stations that are expected to grow, such as multi-well pads, compressor stations, tank farm gateways, metering skids with several runs and pipeline remote terminal units that must collect many analog and discrete points. The ability to add six-slot backplanes means a single controller can concentrate the I/O of an entire site and report to the SCADA host over Ethernet, serial or radio. In Oman, such architectures are common in oil and gas gathering networks, gas processing plants and utility pumping stations that serve industrial areas around Sohar and Salalah.

Seven Star LLC supplies the ROC827 to operators, EPC contractors and SCADA integrators throughout Oman and the GCC. When a project needs a fixed-size alternative, compare the OMNI 6000 flow computer for liquid and gas measurement, review the FloBoss S600+ flow computer for fiscal metering, or read what a flow computer does to choose the correct architecture.

About brand
Flow computers and remote controllers lead the Emerson listing here: the ROC800 series and the FloBoss 107 used for gas and liquid measurement at wellheads, metering skids and pipeline stations. Emerson, founded in 1890 and headquartered in St. Louis, USA, also stands behind Micro Motion Coriolis meters, Fisher FIELDVUE valve controllers and the DeltaV control system. Seven Star LLC, an independent supplier, sources these Emerson products and their spare parts for users in Oman and the GCC.

Emerson product families on this page

The measurement and control group includes the ROC809 and the expandable ROC827 Remote Operations Controllers, the ROC800L for liquid measurement and the FloBoss 107 Flow Manager. Flow metering is represented by Micro Motion ELITE CMF Coriolis sensors and the 5700 transmitter. For valves there is the DVC6200 digital valve controller, plus solenoid valves and a safety relief valve. DeltaV hardware includes the PK Controller and DeltaV SIS components. Field tools are the AMS Trex Device Communicator and the earlier 475 Field Communicator, and wireless networks use the 1410S gateway with the 781S smart antenna. The cooling items are Copeland scroll and semi-hermetic compressors, which were sold for many years under the Emerson name.

Where Emerson equipment is used

ROC and FloBoss units calculate and log gas and liquid flow at production sites and custody transfer points. Micro Motion meters measure mass flow and density in loading, blending and fiscal metering. DVC6200 controllers position control valves and report valve diagnostics, and DeltaV runs process units in refineries, chemical plants and utilities. Copeland compressors serve air conditioning and refrigeration plants.

Frequently Asked Questions

How does the ROC827 expand beyond its base module slots?
The base ROC827 backplane carries the CPU, a power input module and up to three communication or I/O modules. Up to four expansion I/O backplanes can be added, each with six module slots, which raises the controller to a maximum of 27 module slots without replacing the base unit.
Why choose the ROC827 instead of a fixed-slot controller?
The ROC827 lets a project begin with only the I/O it needs and grow as the site grows. A small wellhead can run on the three-slot base, while a compressor station or multi-run meter skid can add expansion backplanes later and reuse the same CPU, configuration and ROCLINK 800 workflow.
How do I calculate the final size and power draw of a ROC827?
The data sheet instructs you to add the widths of a base backplane, a left and right end cap and each expansion backplane, and to add the weights and input power of the base unit, expansion backplanes and all modules. A base unit draws 104 mA on a 12 V module, 110 mA on 24 V and 115 mA on 30 V.
Which protocols and ports does the ROC827 support?
The CPU provides a local operator interface, Ethernet and RS-232, and up to three modules add RS-232, RS-422/485 or dial-up modem links. ROC Plus and Modbus slave are available on all ports, and Modbus host is available on every port except the local operator interface.
