Masoneilan 80385 Three-Way Combining Control Valve

Description

Overview

The Masoneilan 80385 is the combining model of the Baker Hughes Masoneilan 80000 Series three-way control valve. In the 80000 numbering system the seat type digit 5 identifies the combining design, which is why the model reads 80385, and the valve is used where two separate streams enter the valve through an upper and a lower inlet port and leave together through one common outlet. Baker Hughes describes the 80000 Series as a heavy duty three-way valve for either combining or diverting service, and states that on combining service the valve has two inlet ports and one outlet and is used to combine two fluids in variable proportions.

Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of Masoneilan products in Oman, supplies the Masoneilan 80385 to refineries, power plants, district cooling systems and chemical plants in the GCC that need one valve to blend two streams. Our Muscat valve team reviews the fluid, temperature and pressure of each inlet, then confirms body material, bonnet and actuator before a formal RFQ is raised.

Combining Principle of the Masoneilan 80385

The Masoneilan 80385 has a dual seated design with a single plug that moves between an upper seat ring and a lower seat ring. The three connections of the Masoneilan 80385 are marked on the body: C for the common port, U for the upper port and L for the lower port, and the letters are stamped on the connections so that the piping is installed correctly. In the combining service of the Masoneilan 80385 the fluids enter through U and L and leave through C. At the two ends of the stroke one inlet port is fully open and the other closed, and in between the opening of one port grows as the other falls, so the actuator travel sets the mixing ratio between the two streams.

The Cv data show how neatly the proportions add up. For every size the Cv of the upper port and the Cv of the lower port at any plug position add up to the full rated Cv. For the 4 inch valve, whose rated Cv is 124, the two ports have Cv values of 12.4 and 111.6 at 10 percent travel, 62 and 62 at mid-stroke and 111.6 and 12.4 at 90 percent travel. The Masoneilan 80385 is installed with flow tending to open the valve at both ports, which Baker Hughes names as the principal advantage of the arrangement, because flow that tends to open the plug gives the valve inherent stability and good throttling control.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 80385

Heavy guiding is a standard feature of the Masoneilan 80385, in which the plug is guided at the top and within the seat ring locations, which provides a well supported and stable design. Large flow galleries give high capacity with low pressure recovery, so high critical flow factors are obtained, and the published FL runs from 0.90 to 0.92 over the stroke. Seat rings are threaded, and an optional lantern ring and a lubricator with isolation valve can be fitted to the packing box. The Cv ratio is 50 to 1, the characteristic is linear and the valve is offered with full capacity trim only.

Sizes run from 0.75 to 12 inch (20 to 300 mm) and ASME Class 150, 300 and 600, with flanged and ring joint ends listed for all sizes and threaded and socket weld ends in the 0.75 to 2 inch sizes. Welded ends, other flange configurations and ratings above Class 600 are available on request. Bodies and bonnets are carbon steel (ASTM A216 WCC), stainless steel (ASTM A351 CF8M) or chrome-molybdenum steel (ASTM A217 WC9), with a NACE version built to MR0103. Plugs and seat rings are 316 stainless steel, with hardfaced seats available, and guide bushings are 440C stainless steel or Stellite 6.

Capacity and Dimensions of the Masoneilan 80385

The rated Cv of the Masoneilan 80385 is 6 for the 0.75 inch valve, 9 for 1 inch, 21 for 1.5 inch, 36 for 2 inch, 75 for 3 inch, 124 for 4 inch, 270 for 6 inch, 480 for 8 inch, 750 for 10 inch and 1080 for 12 inch. The orifice diameter grows from 0.88 in (22.3 mm) to 10.5 in (267 mm) and the travel from 0.5 in (12.7 mm) to 3.5 in (88.9 mm). The 12 inch size uses the 37/38 spring diaphragm actuator because its travel exceeds 2.5 inch.

For a Class 150 raised face body, dimension A (face to face) of the Masoneilan 80385 is 7.24 in (184 mm) for the 3/4 inch valve, 10.00 in (254 mm) for 2 inch, 13.90 in (353 mm) for 4 inch and 28.78 in (731 mm) for 12 inch. Dimension F is half of dimension A for the combining model. The body sub-assembly with the standard bonnet weighs 44 lb (20 kg) in 3/4 inch Class 150 and 2875 lb (1307 kg) in 12 inch Class 150 or 300. The extension bonnet, listed as the EB option in the numbering system, raises dimension C from 5.12 in to 9.17 in on the 3/4 inch valve.

Temperature and Maintenance

For the Masoneilan 80385 the standard bonnet covers a working band from -20°F to +450°F (-29°C to +232°C) in carbon and stainless steel, and chrome-moly bodies start at +32°F (0°C). Choosing the EB extension bonnet with graphite packing lifts the ceiling to +800°F (+427°C), which suits hotter streams. The seat is Class II out of the box, and a tighter Class III or IV can be supplied when the service calls for it. The instruction manual describes the disassembly sequence: air is applied to the actuator to lift the plug just off the upper seat, the bottom flange and gasket are removed, and the plug and stem are withdrawn from below. Seating surfaces make a 60 degree angle with the plug axis and are lapped with grinding compound, and seat rings are tightened with a ring wrench without over-tightening, since excessive torque distorts the ring.

Key Features

Key attributes of the Masoneilan 80385 as a mixing valve:

  • Combining service with two inlet ports (upper and lower) and a single common outlet for mixing two fluids in variable proportion.
  • A single dual seated plug with flow to open at both inlets keeps the valve stable while it mixes.
  • Plug guided at the top and in both seat rings, with large flow galleries that keep pressure recovery low (FL 0.90 to 0.92).
  • Linear characteristic with a 50 to 1 Cv ratio and rated Cv from 6 to 1080 across ten sizes.
  • Sizes of 0.75 to 12 inch and ASME Class 150 to 600 in carbon steel, stainless steel and chrome-moly.
  • Seat tightness is Class II by default, with Class III or IV as options.
  • Optional extension bonnet, Low-E packing, lubricator and isolation valve, limit stops, NACE construction and oxygen cleaning.
  • Mounts with the Masoneilan 87/88 spring diaphragm actuators, and the 37/38 actuator on the 12 inch size.

Industrial Applications

The Masoneilan 80385 is used wherever two streams are blended to a controlled outlet temperature or composition: hot and cold water mixing for process heating and cooling, bypass control around heat exchangers, steam and condensate blending, additive and diluent blending, and temperature control of lubricating and seal oil circuits. Plants in Muscat and Sohar that blend hot return and cold supply water, and the district cooling and desalination facilities of the Batinah coast, use three-way valves of this kind to hold supply temperature, while the Salalah industrial zone has comparable process-heating loops.

Seven Star LLC also supplies the Masoneilan 80385 with the rest of the 80000 range. The Masoneilan 80000 Series 3-way control valve page covers the family, spare packing and gaskets are on the 80000 Series seal kit page, and the valve mounts on the Masoneilan Type 87/88 spring-diaphragm actuators.

About brand
Masoneilan has built control valves since 1882, and its Camflex eccentric plug rotary valve and 21000 series globe valve are fixtures in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Every valve carries a serial number and a long model number that defines the actuator, body and trim. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Masoneilan control valves, actuators, regulators, positioners and level instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We source complete valves as well as Masoneilan spare parts against that nameplate data.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series

The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.

Where Masoneilan valves are used

Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.

Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need

For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Masoneilan 80385?
It is the combining model of the Masoneilan 80000 Series three-way control valve. Two streams enter through the upper and lower ports and leave through the common port, so the valve mixes two fluids in variable proportions.
How does the Masoneilan 80385 control the mixing ratio?
A single plug moves between an upper and a lower seat. At any plug position the Cv of the upper port and the Cv of the lower port add up to the rated Cv, so the actuator position sets the ratio, for example 12.4 and 111.6 for a 4 inch valve at 10 percent travel.
What sizes, ratings and capacities are available?
Sizes run from 0.75 to 12 inch in ASME Class 150, 300 and 600, with rated Cv of 6, 9, 21, 36, 75, 124, 270, 480, 750 and 1080. The characteristic is linear with a 50 to 1 Cv ratio.
What temperature range does the valve cover?
The standard bonnet covers -20F to +450F (-29C to +232C), and an extension bonnet with graphite packing extends the maximum to +800F (+427C). Class II seat leakage is standard, with Class III and IV on request.
