ADLINK MXE-310 Compact Fanless Edge Computer
Overview
The ADLINK MXE-310 is a compact, fanless edge computing platform in ADLINK Technology’s Matrix series, powered by 13th Gen Intel® Core™ i7/i5/i3 processors from the Raptor Lake embedded family. In a housing of only 180 × 130 × 70 mm it delivers DDR5 memory up to 64 GB, three display interfaces, up to six LAN ports, four COM ports, digital I/O and optional CAN bus, which makes the ADLINK MXE-310 a practical choice for machine controllers, data gateways and AI inspection nodes that have to fit inside a crowded control panel.
Seven Star LLC supplies the ADLINK MXE-310 to automation contractors, OEMs and plant engineering teams in Oman and across the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. We help customers select the processor, memory and storage build and coordinate accessories such as the DIN-rail bracket and power adapter, so the unit can be dropped into panels at oil and gas, utility and manufacturing sites.
Operating Principle
The ADLINK MXE-310 relies on passive conduction cooling. Heat from the 15 W or 28 W processor is carried through thermal pads into the finned top cover, which spreads it over a large surface area and releases it to the surrounding air without any fan. ADLINK rates the unit for −20°C to 60°C operation with 0.6 m/s airflow at 15 W CPU power, and for storage from −40°C to 85°C excluding the drive. Because there is no fan and the recommended storage is solid state, there are no moving parts to wear, no air filters to change and far less dust drawn across the circuit board.
The ADLINK MXE-310 mechanical design is qualified to 30 G shock according to IEC 60068-2-27 and 3 Grms random vibration from 5 to 500 Hz according to IEC 60068-2-64, so the computer keeps running when mounted on machinery or in vehicles. ADLINK pairs the hardware with its EdgeGO remote management and control software, allowing engineers to monitor device health and push updates to distributed units without travelling to each site.
Engineering Design of the ADLINK MXE-310
Inside the ADLINK MXE-310, two DDR5 SO-DIMM sockets running at up to 4800 MHz support a maximum of 64 GB, which leaves room for containerised applications and AI inference workloads. Display output is available from one USB4 Type-C port with monitor support, one DisplayPort and one HDMI (with a second HDMI as an option). The standard build carries two GbE ports based on the Intel I226-IT controller, and the platform can be ordered with up to six LAN ports for machine-vision cameras or segregated control and enterprise networks. USB connectivity covers two USB 3.2 Type-A and three USB 2.0 Type-A ports.
For field connectivity the ADLINK MXE-310 offers two RS-232/422/485 and two RS-232 COM ports on DB9 connectors, an 8-channel digital input and 8-channel digital output block, an optional DB9 CAN port and Realtek ALC888S audio. Expansion is provided by an M.2 2280 M-key slot (PCIe x2) for NVMe storage, an M.2 2230 E-key slot for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth, and an M.2 3042 B-key slot for 4G/LTE modules, plus one SATA III bay for a 2.5-inch SSD. ADLINK’s adaptive function module expansion over PCIe x4 allows customised I/O, and the company highlights integration with the Hailo-8 AI accelerator delivering 26 TOPS. Power is 12 to 24 VDC with ±5% tolerance, and TPM 2.0 is fitted for secure boot.
Key Features
The ADLINK MXE-310 brings the following capabilities to compact industrial installations:
- Processor options span the Core i3-1315UE and i5-1335UE at 15 W and the i5-1350PE and i7-1370PE at 28 W, from 6 to 14 cores.
- Dual DDR5 SO-DIMM sockets at up to 4800 MHz support up to 64 GB for virtualised or AI workloads.
- Three display connectors, Type-C, DisplayPort and HDMI, drive operator screens without an add-in graphics card.
- Two GbE LAN ports on Intel I226-IT controllers are standard, and configurations with up to six LAN ports suit multi-camera inspection.
- Four COM ports, two of them RS-232/422/485, plus 8 DI and 8 DO connect directly to instruments, relays and indicators.
- An optional CAN bus port links the computer to vehicle, mobile machinery and generator controllers.
- M.2 B-key, E-key and M-key slots accept LTE, Wi-Fi and NVMe storage, and the AFM interface adds custom I/O.
- The fanless 180 × 130 × 70 mm chassis supports wall or DIN-rail mounting and runs from −20°C to 60°C.
Industrial Applications
In oil and gas operations, the ADLINK MXE-310 fits the role of a compact edge gateway inside wellsite, pipeline block valve and metering cabinets, where it polls Modbus RTU devices over its serial ports, buffers data locally on NVMe storage and forwards it over LTE or fibre to a central SCADA system. Its small footprint and DIN-rail option make it easy to retrofit into existing panels. In power distribution and water networks, the same unit can run protocol conversion, local alarm logic and remote diagnostics at substations, pumping stations and reverse osmosis plants.
Manufacturers in the Sohar, Salalah and Duqm industrial zones use platforms like the ADLINK MXE-310 for AI object detection on production lines, self-service kiosks, motion controller supervision and semiconductor or packaging equipment data collection, all applications that ADLINK names for the platform. Seven Star LLC supplies the ADLINK MXE-310 with engineering support in Muscat, helping customers in Oman and the GCC specify LAN count, CAN option, memory and operating system before delivery.
