Overview

The Masoneilan 35002 SB is the separable bonnet version of the Baker Hughes Masoneilan 35002 Series Camflex II rotary control valve. In the Camflex II numbering system the design code SB marks an optional Camflex with a separable bonnet, and the general data of the technical specification describes the body as cast with a separable bonnet in sizes of 1 inch through 12 inch (DN 25 to 300), whereas the standard Camflex II is cast with a long integral bonnet. What the Separable Bonnet Changes in the Masoneilan 35002 SB

In a standard Camflex II the bonnet is cast as part of the body, and the shaft, packing and guide bushings are reached through the body neck. In the Masoneilan 35002 SB the bonnet is a separate pressure-containing part, bolted to the body with studs and nuts and sealed with a gasket. The Baker Hughes instruction manual describes the consequence for maintenance: the bonnet nuts are removed and the bonnet is lifted off complete with the packing and packing follower, as an assembly, from the body, after which the shaft support and plug are removed in the usual way. The Masoneilan 35002 SB can be inspected, repacked and re-sealed without disturbing a one-piece casting, and the bonnet can be supplied in a different material from the body.

The separable bonnet also changes what is listed in the materials tables. For separable bonnet valves the bonnet (B003) is ASTM A105 for 1 to 2 inch or ASTM A216 grade WCC or WCB for 1 to 6 inch, the bonnet studs (B005) are ASTM A193 grade B8 class 2 and the nuts (B016) are ASTM A194 grade 8, the body gasket (B015) is AISI 316L with graphite, and the packing flange (B213) is solution annealed 304 stainless steel limited to HRc 22. A stop ring (100) is installed in the bonnet before it is placed on the body.

Camflex II Rotary Operating Principle

The Masoneilan 35002 SB controls flow by rotating an eccentric plug into and out of a seat ring. The plug is carried on a shaft supported by an upper and a lower guide bushing, and because the plug swings away from the seat as it opens, it does not wipe the seat during most of the stroke. Rotation is 50 degrees for the standard Camflex II. The shouldered shaft design provides blowout prevention, the triple over-sized bearing system guides the shaft, and the splined shaft and enclosed actuator linkage reduce deadband and hysteresis. On the Masoneilan 35002 SB the flow direction can be flow to open or flow to close, and the valve position indicator is large and highly visible.

Engineering Design and Materials of the Masoneilan 35002 SB

The body of the Masoneilan 35002 SB is rated to ASME Class 600 according to B16.34 as standard, and the flanged versions are limited by the flange rating. Body materials are carbon steel, 316 stainless steel for flangeless valves, 316L for flanged valves and Hastelloy C for 1 to 4 inch. The plug is solid Stellite No. 6 for 1 to 4 inch valves and 316L stainless steel with a hardfaced seating surface for 3 to 16 inch valves, and the seat ring is a solid clamped ring in 316 stainless steel with optional Stellite No. 6 in the smaller sizes, a PTFE insert for service up to 450°F (232°C) or a PCTFE insert for -50 to -320°F (-46 to -196°C). Packing is carbon core braided PTFE and the guide bushings are 440C stainless steel with Stellite No. 6.

End connections of the Masoneilan 35002 SB, built for sizes 1 to 12 inch, are as follows: threaded NPT for the 1 inch size, flangeless valves clamped between ASME Class 150, 300 or 600 flanges, and flanged valves bolted to Class 150 or 300 flanges, or to Class 600 flanges in 1 to 8 inch. Reduced trim factors of 0.4 and 0.6 are available in all sizes, and the low flow trim factors 0.036 and 0.07 require an SVI II or SVI3 digital positioner.

Flow Capacity of the Masoneilan 35002 SB

The maximum rated Cv of the Masoneilan 35002 SB, as for the standard Camflex II, at 50 degrees of opening, flow to open, is 14 for the 1 inch valve, 33 for 1.5 inch, 50 for 2 inch, 135 for 3 inch, 230 for 4 inch, 500 for 6 inch, 850 for 8 inch, 1300 for 10 inch and 1750 for 12 inch, with a critical flow factor FL of 0.85. In the flow-to-close direction the rated Cv is the same or slightly higher, up to 15, 39, 53 and 145 for the first four sizes, and FL is 0.68. The characteristic is linear, and an equal percentage behaviour can be obtained with an SVI positioner or a 4700 series positioner. The optional differential velocity device reduces the rated Cv, for example to 5 for the 1 inch valve and to 684 for the 12 inch valve, in exchange for up to 18 dBA noise attenuation.

Maintenance Data for the Masoneilan 35002 SB

The manual gives the bonnet tightening torques for the separable bonnet of the Masoneilan 35002 SB: 22 lb.ft (30 m.N) for the 1.5 inch valve, 55 lb.ft (75 m.N) for 3 and 4 inch, 107 lb.ft (145 m.N) for 6 and 8 inch and 193 lb.ft (260 m.N) for 10 and 12 inch. The nuts must be tightened evenly in steps of 25, 50 and 75 percent of the specified torque while the bonnet flange and shaft axis are kept aligned, and the old bonnet gasket must not be re-used. On the Masoneilan 35002 SB, sizes of 1 to 3 inch use seven pieces of packing and larger sizes use six, with the skive cuts offset about 120 degrees. After reassembly the seat ring must be aligned with the plug using the lever, and the seat ring retainer is tightened to the minimum torque of the manual, which is 60 lb.ft (81 m.N) for the 1 inch valve.
