Masoneilan 34005 Series Triple Offset Butterfly Valve

Overview

The Masoneilan 34005 is the Baker Hughes Triple Offset Butterfly Valve (TOBV) for rotary control and isolation duty from vacuum up to high-pressure applications. Its non-rubbing, metal-to-metal seal gives zero-leakage, bi-directional shutoff with minimal torque, and the sealing system is certified fire-tested. Compared with gate, globe or ball valves of the same size and pressure class, Baker Hughes states that the 34005 Series saves space and weight while reducing installation and maintenance cost, which is a real advantage on crowded skids and large-diameter lines.

Sealing Principle of the Masoneilan 34005

A triple offset disc is positioned so that the seal ring does not rub against the seat while the disc travels, and contact occurs only as the valve reaches the closed position. In the Masoneilan 34005 this removes the wear and galling that limit conventional high-performance butterfly valves, because the surfaces separate immediately on opening. The standard seat is hardfaced 316 stainless steel with a surface hardness of 67 HRC, chosen to resist abrasion and erosion, and the seal ring is available as a laminated stainless steel and graphite ring or as a solid ring in alloy options.

Although the valve has passed multiple fire tests to API 607, Baker Hughes points out that the metal seat-to-seal arrangement is inherently fire-safe regardless of the direction of flow or the high-pressure side. Unlike many gate and ball valves, the triple offset design does not trap fluid in the body cavity, which further reduces hazard if the valve must operate and isolate after a fire.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 34005

The tech spec numbers eleven design features. The seat and seal system is fully field-replaceable, so a worn seal does not mean off-site repair or replacement of the whole valve. A splined disc-to-stem connection allows axial movement of the stem independent of the disc, protecting the joint from temperature and pressure effects and minimizing hysteresis. The one-piece stem has a blowout prevention ring outside the pressure boundary plus redundant mechanisms conforming to API 609, and an indexed stem gives positive visual indication of disc and seal ring position after installation.

Hardened elongated stem bearings support the shaft, the adjustable, field-replaceable packing is certified to international fugitive emission standards, and body wall thickness is increased in accordance with API 600 for greater corrosion allowance. The numbering system covers the actuator type (S98), body series 34, actuator mounting orientation, body style (lug, wafer, double flanged short pattern or long pattern), seal type, design and a suffix for special operation such as cryogenic.

Sizing Data and Technical Specifications

The Cv tables in the technical specification for the Masoneilan 34005 run from fully closed to 100 percent opening (90 degrees) for each size. At Class 150 in the preferred, flow-to-close direction the Masoneilan 34005 reaches a Cv of 68 in NPS 3, 141 in NPS 4, 511 in NPS 6, 1076 in NPS 8, 3331 in NPS 12, 16432 in NPS 24 and 81216 in NPS 48. In the non-preferred, flow-to-open direction the same sizes give 60, 123, 479, 1011, 2972, and so on. Pressure recovery factor FL falls from 0.850 at 10 percent opening to 0.600 at full opening, and XT falls from 0.46 to 0.19. Series 98 Actuators and Controls

The Masoneilan 34005 is normally paired with the Series 98 pneumatic Scotch yoke actuator, a modular design built from torque, pressure, spring and direct-acting modules. Its integral single-piece cast housing carries two ISO drilling patterns, symmetrical and canted yoke options and replaceable self-lubricating PTFE bearings, and mounting follows ISO 5211:2001(E) with NAMUR-VDE shaft-driven accessories. Spring-end torque runs from 2,744 to 445,261 lb-in, and the operating range is -20 degF to 200 degF as standard, up to 300 degF for high-temperature and down to -50 degF for low-temperature options, with IP66/IP67M protection, ATEX and SIL 3 suitability. For positioning, a Masoneilan SVI3 digital valve positioner can be fitted to the actuator.
