Masoneilan 72000 Series Large Mass Flow Control Valve

Description

Overview

The Masoneilan 72000 Series is a family of energy-management and low-noise angle control valves from Baker Hughes, designed for applications with large mass flow rates and high differential pressures. Typical installations include compressor surge control, gas-to-flare, atmospheric vent and other services where the ratio of inlet to outlet pressure demands substantial noise attenuation in a large valve. Unlike catalogue valves, each Masoneilan 72000 is custom-engineered to the application, so the exact configuration can differ from the general specification.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the Masoneilan 72000 Series Large Mass Flow Control Valve to gas processing, LNG, petrochemical and power projects across the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Because the valve is built to order, our Muscat instrumentation and valve engineers work with project teams from the sizing data sheet onward so that trim, body and actuator are specified once and correctly.

Operating Principle

A large pressure ratio releases a great deal of energy, and if that energy is not managed it appears as noise and vibration. The Masoneilan 72000 manages it in two ways. For low to moderate pressure-drop ratios, single-stage or double-stage Lo-dB trim is used: the size and spacing of each hole drilled in the cage is customized so that the sound pressure level at the trim exit is minimized. For extreme ratios, Masoneilan V-LOG trim, with as many as 40 stages, directs the gas through discrete channels containing 90-degree turns and intermediate contractions and expansions, so that each stage dissipates kinetic energy and then recovers part of it before the next.

The valve body is designed around gas expansion. As gas drops in pressure its volume rises, and downstream velocity climbs if the piping ignores that. The 72000 therefore uses expanded outlet areas, and Baker Hughes considers both outlet Mach number and outlet expansion ratio when calculating system noise per IEC 60534-8-3. The valve is normally installed flow-to-open so the fluid expands radially from the smaller cage into the larger body, and a balanced plug keeps actuator thrust requirements lower than an unbalanced design would; for flow-to-close installations an auxiliary pilot plug may be supplied.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 72000

The Masoneilan 72000 Series is an angle valve with a fabricated or cast body, bonnet and bonnet flange. The technical specification lists inlet sizes from 4 to 30 inches (DN 100 to 750) and outlet sizes from 6 to 36 inches (DN 150 to 900), with larger sizes on request, while the Baker Hughes product page quotes 6 x 8 through 36 x 48 inch configurations; because the valve is engineered per order, final sizes are confirmed during quotation. Inlet ratings run from ASME Class 150 to 2500 and outlet ratings from Class 150 to 600, with ASME flanges, RTJ flanges, butt weld and API connections available.

Body materials include carbon steel, low-temperature carbon steel, 316 stainless steel and chrome-moly steels, with other materials on request. Trim options are a ported cage, single- or double-stage Lo-dB, V-LOG stack or partial stack, with a quick-change seat ring and balanced, unbalanced or auxiliary-pilot plugs. Top-entry trim, generous padeyes and tapped holes for lifting, cage-guided trim components with ample clearance and a minimum number of gaskets and soft goods are intended to make outage planning and stocking easier.

Key Features

The following features explain why the Masoneilan 72000 is specified on the highest-energy letdown duties:

  • Every valve is custom-engineered to the specific application and operating conditions.
  • Single- and double-stage Lo-dB trims and V-LOG trims with up to 40 stages provide a wide range of noise attenuation options.
  • Expanded outlet areas accommodate gas expansion and lower overall system noise.
  • A balanced plug delivers stability with smaller actuator thrust requirements than an unbalanced design.
  • Flexible automated design tools allow high capacities and custom Cv values through different plug diameters, stroke lengths and gallery diameters.
  • Top-entry trim and cage-guided components make inspection and replacement easier.
  • Padeyes and tapped holes are provided for standard lifting and handling equipment.
  • Carbon steel, low-temperature carbon steel, stainless steel and chrome-moly body materials match the service temperature.

Industrial Applications

Baker Hughes lists compressor anti-surge, gas-to-flare venting, gas depressurization and petrochemical and LNG service as the principal uses of the Masoneilan 72000. These are the services where a standard globe valve would be oversized, noisy or mechanically stressed: a flare line must pass very large mass flows, and a depressurization valve sees a high pressure ratio across the valve. In Oman the valve is relevant to LNG liquefaction, gas gathering and processing plants, and petrochemical complexes at Sohar and Salalah, where compressor trains and flare systems are central to safe operation.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 72000 Series to EPC contractors, licensors and plant operators throughout Oman and the GCC. We also stock related maintenance items such as the 72000/78 Series O-ring and packing kit and the 49000 Series V-LOG seal kit, and supply Type 51/52/53 piston actuators for the high-thrust duties these valves demand.

Technical Specifications

The table below summarizes typical data for the Masoneilan 72000 from the Baker Hughes technical specification and product page. Because the valve is engineered per order, the exact configuration may differ, and the official technical specification should be consulted.

About brand
Masoneilan has built control valves since 1882, and its Camflex eccentric plug rotary valve and 21000 series globe valve are fixtures in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Every valve carries a serial number and a long model number that defines the actuator, body and trim. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Masoneilan control valves, actuators, regulators, positioners and level instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We source complete valves as well as Masoneilan spare parts against that nameplate data.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series

The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.

Where Masoneilan valves are used

Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.

Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need

For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Masoneilan 72000 used for?
The Masoneilan 72000 is used for large mass flow and high pressure-drop services such as compressor anti-surge, gas-to-flare venting, gas depressurization and petrochemical and LNG letdown, where substantial noise attenuation is needed in a large valve.
