Overview

The Masoneilan 48000 is a globe control valve from Baker Hughes with a hung-cage construction, designed especially for high-temperature, high-pressure steam where a conventional cage tends to deform because of frequent heat cycling or sudden temperature changes. The manual states that the series is also well suited to vapors other than steam and to gases. Operating Principle of the Masoneilan 48000

Like other cage-guided globe valves, the Masoneilan 48000 throttles flow with a plug that slides inside a cage, so the cage windows set the flow characteristic. The numbering system selects a linear or equal-percentage characteristic and a standard cage or a Lo-dB noise-reducing cage. The manual states the flow direction rule: a Lo-dB cage is installed flow-to-open and a standard cage flow-to-close, and the valve must be installed so that flow follows the arrow cast on the body.

Three plug styles are provided. The single-seat contoured plug is the unbalanced contoured trim, the unbalanced plug is a solid design, and the balanced plug carries a double seal ring structure that reduces seat leakage. The valve is operated by Masoneilan spring diaphragm actuators (87 air-to-close and 88 air-to-open) or cylinder actuators (51 double acting, 52 and 53 spring cylinder), mounted on the bonnet.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 48000

A seat ring gasket is inserted between the body and the seat ring, and a spiral wound body gasket is standard; the manual stresses that a new gasket must be fitted each time the valve is disassembled. Packing is assembled from a braided back-up ring, flexible graphite rings and a second back-up ring, with an optional lantern ring when a lubricator or leak detection connection is installed in the 1/4 in. NPT port in the bonnet. The plug is joined to the stem by a staking-type plug-stem pin, and the manual lists pin hole diameters of 0.185, 0.216, 0.248 and 0.311 in. for stems of 1/2, 5/8, 3/4 and 1 in.

Torque values are published for sizes 2, 3, 4 and 6 in. Seat ring retainer threads are 3.00, 3.625, 5.0 and 6.5 in. with 16 threads per inch, and body studs are 1.5, 1.625, 1.875 and 1.75 in. with 6, 8, 8 and 12 studs. The 48200 unbalanced type is not provided with a seal ring. An extension bonnet (EB) is listed as an optional configuration.

Installation guidance in the manual is practical. Clean the piping and valve of welding chips, scale, oil, grease and dirt, provide a manually operated stop valve on each side with a throttling valve in the bypass so the Masoneilan 48000 can be inspected or removed without a shutdown, and do not insulate the bonnet when the valve is heat insulated. Before any maintenance the valve must be isolated and the process pressure vented, and the manual warns that the actuator may be preloaded by air pressure or springs.
