Motorola DP4601e MOTOTRBO Digital Portable Radio
Overview
The Motorola DP4601e is the limited-keypad model of the MOTOTRBO DP4000e Series, a family of DMR-standard digital portable two-way radios built for professional users who need integrated voice and data, strong audio and long battery life. It sits between the no-keypad DP4401e and the full-keypad DP4801e: a colour screen and a compact navigation keypad give access to contacts, text messages and menu functions while keeping the front of the radio simple enough for gloved operation. Bluetooth 4.0 audio, integrated Wi-Fi and multi-constellation GNSS are standard on the Motorola DP4601e, and Motorola notes that the “1”-suffix models are the variants that include these features. Motorola Solutions now lists the DP4000e Series as discontinued, so the Motorola DP4601e is mainly relevant to organisations that already run DP4000e fleets and need matching units, spares or replacements.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Motorola DP4601e, subject to availability, to facilities, utilities and contractors across Oman and the GCC, with engineering support in Muscat. We help buyers check the frequency band, battery and accessory set required to match an existing fleet before an order is placed.
Operating Principle
The Motorola DP4601e transmits and receives using the ETSI DMR protocol (TS 102 361-1, -2 and -3) with 4FSK digital modulation in a 12.5 kHz channel. Digital operation on the narrow 12.5 kHz channel uses spectrum efficiently and, according to Motorola, delivers clearer voice and longer battery life than analogue operation. Voice is digitised by an AMBE+2 vocoder, and the radio still supports analogue operation so it can work alongside legacy equipment during migration. The specification sheet lists DMR Tier II and Tier III, and the series supports Dual Capacity Direct Mode, IP Site Connect, Capacity Plus and Capacity Max system types, depending on licensing and configuration.
Data runs over the same channels as voice. Canned and freeform text messaging, Work Order Ticketing, event-driven location updates from GPS and GLONASS, and Bluetooth-based indoor location tracking all use the DMR data capability. The integrated accelerometer senses a fall and can initiate a man-down call, and Transmit Interrupt can clear a channel for an emergency transmission. The practical consequence is one portable that handles voice, status, text and location without separate devices.
Engineering Design of the Motorola DP4601e
With the IMPRES Li-Ion 2450 mAh IP68 battery, the radio measures 130 × 55 × 41 mm and weighs 347 g. The housing is rated IP68 under IEC 60529 for 2 m immersion over 2 hours and is tested to MIL-STD-810 C, D, E, F and G for shock, vibration, dust, rain, salt fog, humidity, solar radiation and temperature extremes. The front carries the colour display, P1 and P2 programmable keys and a four-way navigation pad, while the top carries the channel and volume knobs and the orange emergency button. In total the Motorola DP4601e has five programmable buttons and 1000 channels.
The radio runs from a 7.5 V nominal supply. The 2023 specification sheet lists a range of batteries for the series, from NiMH 1400 mAh to IMPRES Li-Ion 3000 mAh, and with the IMPRES Li-Ion 2900 mAh battery the Motorola DP4601e is rated for up to 27 hours of digital operation on a 5/5/90 profile. Wi-Fi to IEEE 802.11b/g/n with WPA, WPA-2 and WEP security is used for over-the-air software updates, and the limited-keypad model can store up to 64 SSIDs. When fitted with a Motorola UL-approved battery, the series is UL-approved to TIA-4950 for Division 1 and Division 2 hazardous locations as listed in the specification sheet; this is a North American HazLoc approval, not an ATEX/IECEx certificate.
Key Features
The Motorola DP4601e offers the following features listed by Motorola Solutions:
- Colour display and limited keypad for contact selection, text messaging and menu navigation with 1000 channels.
- Bluetooth 4.0 for wireless audio accessories and data devices, with one audio and one data connection at a time.
- Integrated Wi-Fi for remote, over-the-air software updates and radio management.
- GPS and GLONASS location with a cold-start time to first fix under 60 s and horizontal accuracy better than 5 m.
- Integrated accelerometer for optional man-down, plus lone worker, emergency and remote monitor functions.
- Intelligent Audio, SINC+ noise cancellation and an acoustic feedback suppressor for clear speech in loud areas.
- Basic privacy, enhanced privacy and AES encryption options for secure communication.
- IP68 water and dust protection and testing to MIL-STD-810 for demanding outdoor sites.
Industrial Applications
Across Oman, the Motorola DP4601e fits security teams at ports and free zones, operations staff at water treatment and desalination plants, utility field crews, hospitals and large hotels, and maintenance teams on industrial estates in Rusayl, Sohar and Salalah. Its limited keypad gives supervisors access to contacts and text without the bulk of a full keypad, while the IP68 rating and MIL-STD-810 testing cope with heat, dust and coastal humidity. Organisations that already operate DP4000e radios can use the Motorola DP4601e to keep one platform, one accessory set and one programming template across their fleet.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Motorola DP4601e and DP4000e Series accessories to customers in Muscat and the wider GCC. For vehicle-mounted MOTOTRBO units, the Motorola RMN5127C keypad microphone is available, and site networks can be extended with industrial equipment such as the Moxa EDS-G508E managed Ethernet switch and the Siemens SCALANCE WAM766-1 access point. Where crews must enter ATEX-classified zones, the DP4000 Ex Series should be specified instead.

Three items are on this page. The DP4601e is a MOTOTRBO digital portable radio. The DP4801 Ex is the ATEX version of the portable, built for areas where explosive gas or dust may be present. The RMN5127C is an IMPRES enhanced keypad microphone for MOTOTRBO mobile radios, the vehicle and desk units sold as the XPR series in some markets.Ordering Motorola radios and accessories: what we need
A radio model name is only the start. Send the full model number from the label under the battery, which encodes the frequency band, and state the band your license covers: VHF or a UHF range. List what must come with each radio: battery type, charger, antenna and belt clip. For ATEX radios every accessory has to be the Ex-approved version, so name the hazardous zone and gas group. For accessories, give the part number, such as RMN5127C, and the radio model it will be used with.Browse Motorola products by category: Industrial Communications.
