Brand:

Masoneilan 526 Double-Seated Back Pressure Regulator

Description

Overview

The Masoneilan 526 is the back pressure member of the 525/526 double-seated regulator pair from Baker Hughes. The numbering system reads 5 for regulator type, 2 for the double-seated body and 6 for back pressure action, and the instruction manual classifies the Masoneilan 526 as an upstream pressure controlled regulator, shown in its Figure 1b. Where a reducing regulator guards the pressure it delivers, the Masoneilan 526 guards the pressure that is held behind it, which is why it is used as a sustaining valve on pump discharge lines, as a pressure holder on process vessels and headers, and as a pressure controller where excess flow must be passed downstream to keep the supply pressure steady.

For Oman and the wider GCC, Seven Star LLC is a trusted supplier of Masoneilan products that supplies the Masoneilan 526 to process engineers, EPC contractors and maintenance planners. Our Muscat instrumentation team reviews body size, trim, actuator and spring range against your upstream pressure and flow figures, and each enquiry is answered with the Baker Hughes technical specification and instruction manual. The 526-50 differential back pressure model and the EB extension bonnet are covered by the same documents.

Back Pressure Operation of the Masoneilan 526

A back pressure regulator opens when the pressure on its inlet side rises above the set point and closes as it falls back, so the Masoneilan 526 keeps a steady pressure in the upstream system while the surplus flow leaves through the valve. The adjusting procedure given in the manual is the same for the whole family: the regulator is set at the factory when a pressure is specified, otherwise at the minimum of the range on the serial plate. The outlet stop valve is opened first, the inlet stop valve is opened part way so that pressure builds slowly, the control line valve is opened and the setting is read on the gauge. Clockwise turning of the adjusting screw compresses the spring and raises the setting, and counter-clockwise turning lowers it.

The control line is piped from the line 6 to 10 feet from the regulator, or from the discharge line 6 to 10 feet from the pump on pump pressure applications, into the 1/2 inch NPT connection in the diaphragm case. A gauge and a needle valve belong in that line; the needle valve isolates the line and acts as an adjustable choke that prevents cycling caused by pump pulsation. For steam service the regulator should be installed with the diaphragm actuator down so that a water seal protects the diaphragm, and a three-valve bypass lets the Masoneilan 526 be taken out without shutting down the system.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 526

The body of the Masoneilan 526 is a high-capacity globe with two seat rings and a disc plug guided at the top and at the bottom. The Baker Hughes literature explains that this arrangement suits double-seated plugs because it supports the plug against side loads, and that capacity is among the highest for contemporary double-seated regulators with very little pressure recovery, shown by a high critical flow factor. Seat rings are threaded, the characteristic is quick opening, and full-area or reduced-capacity trim is available in every size, the 0.4 factor trim being the practical reduction.

The service route differs from the reducing model. On the Masoneilan 526 the manual has the technician remove the body stud nuts, packing flange and follower and the bonnet, and then take off the blind head together with its lower bushing. Plug stem and plug then leave the body together as one unit from the bottom of the valve, taking care not to damage the plug and the upper bushing. The sequence is the reverse of the top removal described for the 525. As on the whole 500 Series, the spiral-wound body gasket is standard and a new gasket must be fitted every time the valve is opened. The plug, plug stem, plug pin, upper and lower seat rings, packing and gasket are the parts marked in the manual as recommended spares.

Key Features

These are the reasons to specify the Masoneilan 526 for upstream pressure control:

  • Upstream pressure control with a self-operated spring-diaphragm actuator and no external power.
  • Double-seated, top and bottom guided plug for large flow capacity in a compact body.
  • Seven body sizes, 3/4 to 4 inch, carry rated Cv figures that start at 3.6 and end at 125.
  • 526-50 differential back pressure option, and an EB extension bonnet for hot service.
  • For temperatures over the diaphragm rating the actuator is mounted below the body centerline and a condensate barrier protects the diaphragm.
  • Bottom removal of the plug assembly after the blind head is taken off, as described in the manual.
  • Quick opening characteristic with reduced-capacity 0.4 factor trim as an alternative.
  • Estimated useful life of more than 25 years, as stated in the manual for models 525 and 526.

Industrial Applications

Typical uses of the Masoneilan 526 are holding a minimum pressure on a pump discharge, keeping a header or separator at constant pressure while excess gas or liquid is passed on, maintaining pressure on steam condensate and heating returns, and sustaining pressure ahead of process units or flares. In Oman this suits oil and gas facilities in the south and in Fahud, refining and petrochemical plants in Sohar, desalination and power stations along the Batinah coast and utility rooms in Muscat, where a simple self-operated regulator is preferred over a loop with transmitter and controller.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 526 together with the matching Masoneilan 10000 Series double port valve when an instrumented control loop is required instead. The reducing duty on the same body is covered by the 525, and both models share seat rings, packing and gaskets.

About brand
Masoneilan has built control valves since 1882, and its Camflex eccentric plug rotary valve and 21000 series globe valve are fixtures in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Every valve carries a serial number and a long model number that defines the actuator, body and trim. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Masoneilan control valves, actuators, regulators, positioners and level instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We source complete valves as well as Masoneilan spare parts against that nameplate data.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series

The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.

Where Masoneilan valves are used

Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.

Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need

For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the 526 in Masoneilan 526 mean?
