VEGA VEGAMET 841 Field Level Controller

Description

Overview

The VEGA VEGAMET 841 is a controller in a field housing for one continuously measuring analogue level sensor. According to VEGA, it feeds the connected 4–20 mA sensor, processes the measured values and displays them on a large display integrated into a housing built for rough field conditions. With three operating relays and a current output, the VEGA VEGAMET 841 turns a single level transmitter into a complete, stand-alone measuring and control point without a PLC.

Seven Star LLC supplies the VEGA VEGAMET 841 to water and wastewater utilities, irrigation and agriculture projects, contractors and plant operators in Oman and the GCC, from our office in Muscat. The controller is especially useful at remote pumping stations, reservoirs, lift stations and storage tanks where a local display and pump control are needed and where running a signal back to a central control system is not practical.

Operating Principle

The VEGA specification sheet describes the function of the VEGA VEGAMET 841 as follows. The controller can power the connected sensor and process its measurement signals. The requested parameter is shown on the display and also output on the integrated current output for further processing, so the value can be passed to a remote display or a superordinate control system. Operating relays for control of pumps or other devices are integrated into the unit.

The sensor input accepts one 4–20 mA signal and can be selected as active, where the VEGAMET supplies the sensor, or passive, where the sensor has its own supply. As general engineering context, combining sensor supply, linearisation, limit switching and signal retransmission in one field box removes the need for a separate power supply, isolator, indicator and relay module in a panel. VEGA notes that complex programming of control tasks is no longer necessary: functions such as pump control, flow measurement on open channels and weirs, totalisers and limit value monitoring are configured from menus.

Engineering Design of the VEGA VEGAMET 841

The VEGA VEGAMET 841 housing is rated IP66/IP67 to IEC 60529 and Type 4X to UL 50, and the dimensional drawing shows a compact enclosure of about 162 x 111 x 76 mm with cable glands at the bottom. Accessories shown on the VEGA product page include pipe mounting and a sun protection cover, which is relevant for installations exposed to strong sunshine. The instrument operates in ambient temperatures from -40 to +60 °C, with display readability from -20 to +60 °C. Power can be AC 100 to 230 V at 50/60 Hz or DC 24 to 65 V, with maximum consumption of 13 VA or 4 W.

Outputs comprise three operating relays with floating SPDT change-over contacts, one of which can be configured as a fail-safe relay, rated up to 250 V AC or 60 V DC and 1 A, plus one current output of 0/4–20 mA or 20–0/4 mA into a maximum load of 500 Ω. The graphic-capable LC display measures 89 x 56 mm, shows digital and quasi-analogue values and has backlighting; four keys handle the menu. Setup can also be done wirelessly over Bluetooth 5.0 from a smartphone or tablet with the free VEGA app, or from PACTware and a DTM on a Windows PC.

Key Features

The VEGA VEGAMET 841 specification sheet lists these capabilities.

  • The controller feeds and evaluates one 4–20 mA level sensor through an active or passive input.
  • A large backlit graphic display is easy to read from a distance, in sunlight and in darkness.
  • Three SPDT operating relays handle pump control, alarms and overfill protection, with one relay configurable as fail-safe.
  • A 0/4–20 mA current output passes the processed value to a remote display or control system.
  • Pump control, open channel flow measurement, totalising and limit monitoring are set up without programming.
  • Bluetooth 5.0 allows commissioning and diagnosis of the measuring point with a smartphone.
  • Wide supply options of AC 100–230 V or DC 24–65 V suit mains and solar-backed DC installations.
  • The IP66/IP67, Type 4X field housing withstands outdoor duty from -40 to +60 °C.

Industrial Applications

VEGA states that the VEGA VEGAMET 841 enables simple implementation of pump controls, flow measurement on open channels and weirs and totalisers, and that limit values can be reliably monitored, for example for overfill protection. In Oman, this matches duty points such as wet wells at sewage lift stations, treated-effluent storage at wastewater plants, potable water ground tanks and elevated reservoirs, falaj and irrigation channels with weir flow measurement, and fuel or chemical tanks at remote facilities in the interior. One VEGA VEGAMET 841 with a radar sensor and two pumps can replace a float-switch panel and provide a proper level reading at the same time.

Seven Star LLC supplies the VEGA VEGAMET 841 across the Sultanate of Oman and the GCC and can deliver it as a matched set with a VEGA sensor, for instance the VEGA VEGAPULS C21 compact radar sensor for wet wells and channels, the VEGA VEGAPULS 6X radar level transmitter for process tanks, or the VEGA VEGABAR 82 process pressure transmitter for hydrostatic level in reservoirs.

About brand
Yellow housings on tanks and silos usually mean VEGA. The company, founded in 1959 in Schiltach in Germany's Black Forest, concentrates on level, point level and pressure measurement. Seven Star LLC lists VEGA radar and guided wave radar level sensors, vibrating and capacitive level switches, pressure transmitters and display units, and sources them for process plants and utilities in Oman.

VEGA product families on this page

VEGA product names state the measuring principle:
  • VEGAPULS: non-contact radar level sensors, including VEGAPULS 6X, VEGAPULS 64, VEGAPULS 69 and the compact VEGAPULS C21
  • VEGAFLEX 81 and 86: guided wave radar level sensors, and VEGAPASS 81, a bypass tube that is combined with a VEGAFLEX to measure outside the vessel
  • VEGASWING 61 and 63: vibrating fork level switches for liquids
  • VEGAPOINT 21: compact capacitive point level switch
  • VEGABAR 82: process pressure transmitter with ceramic measuring cell
  • VEGADIS 176: external display for 4-20 mA loops
Most VEGA transmitters share the plics modular concept: housing, electronics and the PLICSCOM display module are common across measuring principles, which keeps spare parts simple.

Where VEGA sensors and transmitters are used

VEGA level transmitters are common on crude and product tanks, separators, chemical storage, water and wastewater basins, and cement or aggregate silos across the GCC. Vibrating switches serve as overfill and dry-run protection on pumps and vessels. VEGA pressure transmitters measure process pressure and hydrostatic level in liquids and gases.

Ordering VEGA instruments: what we need

A VEGA device is fully described by its order code and serial number. A code such as FX81.ICEAIFAXKMAM starts with the device type (FX81 is a VEGAFLEX 81, PS64 a VEGAPULS 64, B82 a VEGABAR 82) and continues with letters for approval, process fitting, seal, electronics and housing. Send that code, or the serial number from the type label, and we can check the exact build in VEGA documentation. For a new point, add the medium, vessel height, nozzle size, pressure, temperature and area classification.
