Masoneilan 174-1 Low Pressure Reducing Regulator

Description

Overview

The Masoneilan 174-1 is the pressure reducing model of the Masoneilan 174 Series from Baker Hughes, a spring-loaded, direct-operated regulator for very low outlet pressures. In the Masoneilan numbering system the digit 1 after the series number means a reducing action, and the 174-1 regulates anywhere from 1.4 inches of water column up to 8.8 psig (0.61 barg) while accepting inlet pressure up to 145 psig (10 barg). A large diaphragm gives accurate control at these low settings, and a lever between the diaphragm and the plug provides consistent shutoff tightness, which is why the Masoneilan 174-1 is used for fuel gas, air and blanketing gas where a few millibar matter.

Seven Star LLC, a trusted supplier of Masoneilan products for Oman and the GCC, supplies the Masoneilan 174-1 to utilities, packaged burner builders and maintenance teams. The Muscat instrumentation division selects nozzle size and spring code from inlet pressure, outlet set point and flow, and provides the Baker Hughes technical specification for the exact unit.

Operating Principle of the Masoneilan 174-1

The Masoneilan 174-1 senses outlet pressure internally on the underside of a large elastomeric diaphragm. The range spring pushes the diaphragm down and, through a lever, holds the plug off its seat; as the outlet pressure rises toward the set point the diaphragm lifts against the spring and the lever closes the plug onto a nitrile disc. The lever transmits diaphragm movement to the plug, and Baker Hughes credits this lever design with consistent shutoff tightness, which keeps the outlet from creeping upward at no-flow even when the inlet pressure is far above the very low outlet pressure.

The set point depends on the spring. Nine springs, with type numbers UBB02, UBB03, UBB05, UBB06, UBB07, UBB08, UBB09, UBB10 and UBB12, cover the range in steps: 1.4 to 2.2, 2.2 to 3.7, 3.7 to 8.8, 8.8 to 13.6, 13.6 to 25 and 25 to 39 inches w.c. (3.4 to 98 mbarg in total), then 1.4 to 2.8, 2.8 to 4.4 and 4.4 to 8.8 psig (0.098 to 0.61 barg). The pressure ranges, nozzle size and inlet pressure together decide the offset from the set point, which Baker Hughes tabulates for each combination.

Engineering Design of the Masoneilan 174-1

The Masoneilan 174-1 has a carbon steel body, a 316 stainless steel seat and stem, a nitrile (NBR) disc and diaphragm, a PTFE guide bushing, carbon steel spring and diaphragm cases and a chrome-vanadium steel spring. The body can be turned to four positions relative to the spring case, position 1 being standard, so the regulator can be fitted to tight piping. Connections are NPT or GAS threads in 1/2, 3/4, 1 and 1-1/2 inch sizes, and the assembly weighs 30 lb (13.5 kg). The numbering code ends with a trim size, from 01 to 15, with 01, 02, 04, 08 and 15 marked as standard.

Fifteen nozzles from 1 to 15 give rated Cv values from 0.04 to 4.95 in the reducing version, with the capacity tables built on orifice sizes of 1, 2, 4, 8 and 14 mm. The disc and diaphragm are rated for -0.4 to 194°F (-18 to 90°C), and stainless steel construction is available on request.

Key Features

Engineers pick the Masoneilan 174-1 for low pressure reduction because of the following:

  • Outlet pressures from 1.4 inches w.c. to 8.8 psig can be set with one family of nine springs.
  • The large diaphragm area gives accurate control at very low settings.
  • The lever design provides consistent shutoff tightness through the service life.
  • Internal pressure sensing removes the need for an external impulse line in most installations.
  • Four body-to-spring-case orientations simplify installation in tight spaces.
  • Fifteen nozzles reach from Cv 0.04 up to 4.95 for flows from a trickle to a burner header.
  • In-line, easy maintenance of the diaphragm, seat and spring is possible without changing the piping.
  • Baker Hughes quotes PED 2014/68/EU and ATEX 2014/34/EU for the 174 Series.

Industrial Applications

The Masoneilan 174-1 is the usual choice for burner and boiler fuel gas trains, gas supply to laboratory and kitchen equipment, nitrogen and air blanketing of storage tanks, and low pressure instrument purge lines. In Oman these duties appear in hotels and hospital kitchens in Muscat, in boiler houses at industrial estates around Sohar, and in the tank farms and utility blocks of the Salalah and Duqm free zones, where the downstream pressure is measured in millibar.

In Oman and the GCC, Seven Star LLC supplies the Masoneilan 174-1 next to the family page for the Masoneilan 174 Series regulator and the higher-pressure Masoneilan 172 Series pressure reducing regulator, so a plant can specify reducing, relieving and higher pressure duties from one manufacturer.

Reading the capacity table correctly: Table 8 of the Baker Hughes specification heads its inlet pressure column PSIG (barg), but the entries are printed as barg followed by psig in brackets, for example 10.00 (145), meaning 10 barg or 145 psig. That reading agrees with the 145 psig (10 barg) maximum inlet pressure in the general data, and the capacities on this page use it. Seven Star LLC confirms any critical figure against the current Baker Hughes revision at quotation.

About brand
Masoneilan has built control valves since 1882, and its Camflex eccentric plug rotary valve and 21000 series globe valve are fixtures in refineries, gas plants and power stations. Every valve carries a serial number and a long model number that defines the actuator, body and trim. Seven Star LLC is an independent supplier listing Masoneilan control valves, actuators, regulators, positioners and level instruments for buyers in Oman and the GCC. We source complete valves as well as Masoneilan spare parts against that nameplate data.

Masoneilan control valves and actuator series

The globe valve listing centers on the 21000 series, including the cryogenic version with extension bonnet, and the 41005 cage-guided series in high pressure, API 6A and VRT anti-cavitation executions. The 80385 and 80386 are three-way combining and diverting valves. Rotary products include the 35002 Camflex II and the 37002 MiniTork II butterfly control valve. Actuators cover spring-diaphragm, cylinder and rack-and-pinion designs, among them the 5A cylinder actuator for Camflex II. Masoneilan also makes pressure regulators, SVI digital valve positioners and displacer-type level instruments, and offers Lo-dB trim for noise control.

Where Masoneilan valves are used

Throttling duty on steam, hydrocarbons, gas and water is the daily work of these valves: feedwater and steam conditioning in power plants, separator and compressor loops in gas processing, high pressure drop letdown, cryogenic service in LNG and air separation, and general flow, pressure and level control in refineries and chemical plants.

Ordering Masoneilan valves and spare parts: what we need

For spare parts the serial number is decisive, since the factory record behind it lists trim, materials and actuator. Send a clear nameplate photo with serial number, model number, size and pressure class. For a new valve add the process data: fluid, inlet and outlet pressure, temperature, minimum, normal and maximum flow, required leakage class, fail position, air supply and control signal.

Frequently Asked Questions

What outlet pressures can the Masoneilan 174-1 control?
The 174-1 reducing regulator covers set points from 1.4 inches of water column up to 8.8 psig (0.61 barg), using nine spring types from UBB02 to UBB12. The maximum inlet pressure is 145 psig (10 barg) depending on the nozzle size and set point.
