Masoneilan Model 20 Handwheel and Model 2R Rotary Handwheel
Overview
The Masoneilan Model 20 handwheel is a modular manual override that lets an operator position a globe control valve by hand when air supply or the actuator is not available. Its sibling, the Model 2R, does the same job for rotary valves. The Baker Hughes instruction manual describes the Model 20 as a linear handwheel that can be used on Masoneilan globe designs such as the 21000, 41005 and LincolnLog 18400 Series, and the Model 2R as a rotary handwheel that can be used on designs such as the 35002 Series Camflex. Multiple sizes, strokes and spud diameters allow the handwheel to be fitted to many valve size ranges and models.

Operating Principle of the Masoneilan Model 20 Handwheel
A handwheel such as the Masoneilan Model 20 turns a jack nut on a jack screw, converting rotation into the linear force and travel needed to move the valve stem. In the Masoneilan Model 20 handwheel the jack nut is copper alloy and the jack screw is carbon steel, with a thrust ball bearing in the size 18 stem block version, so a modest hand force produces the output thrust listed in the thrust table. A travel indicator and scale on the yoke show the plug position, and operators are instructed to check the stem position against the scale before any maintenance so that the plug is off the seat.
The Model 2R is a geared rotary handwheel. The technical specification lists it with gearbox ratios of 40:1, 37:1, 34:1, 92:1 and 55:1 and with handwheel diameters from 200 mm to 900 mm, which is why it is sized with the rotary actuator or valve it serves rather than by stroke.
Engineering Design of the Masoneilan Model 20 Handwheel
Three Masoneilan Model 20 handwheel constructions are described. Size 12 and size 18 can be supplied with a stem boot, a neoprene rubber and glass fabric cover that protects the exposed stem and screw, or with a travel stop that limits the stroke. Size 18 is also available with a stem block that clamps the stem. The yoke is ferritic ductile iron, the handwheel is ferritic ductile iron with a carbon steel key and cover plate, the travel indicator is stainless steel, and fasteners are zinc-plated carbon steel with stainless steel lock washers. The standard material temperature range is -22 degF to +449 degF (-30 degC to +232 degC).
Selection data for the Masoneilan Model 20 handwheel are organized by size, stroke, spud diameter, connection series (B, C or D) and yoke height. Size 12 offers strokes of 0.75 to 1.5 in. with a 0.5 in. spud, while size 18 offers 3 and 6 in. strokes with 1 in. spuds and yoke heights of 12 and 16 in. A Masoneilan Model 20 handwheel is specified on control valves that must be operated manually during a plant start-up, an air failure or a maintenance bypass, such as feedwater, fuel gas and anti-surge globe valves in power and refining plants.
