Measurement Principle

The VEGAPULS 64 operates with a transmission frequency of 80 GHz and, with an 80mm antenna, achieves a beam angle of only 3°. The radar sensor receives only distinct, definitive reflections from the product surface, making the measurement more accurate and reliable—an 80 GHz beam reflects almost exclusively from the product surface, while a wider 26 GHz beam also reflects from internal fixtures and agitators.

With a dynamic range of 120dB, the VEGAPULS 64 sets new standards for detecting even the lowest reflected signals, delivering significantly increased measurement certainty especially when measuring hydrocarbons with poor reflective properties. This means virtually all media in the petrochemical industry, from crude oil to liquefied gases, can be measured reliably—regardless of dielectric constant—with an accuracy of ±1mm.

Engineering Design of the VEGAPULS 64

The VEGAPULS 64 covers a measuring range up to 30m, process temperatures from -196°C to +200°C, and process pressures from -1 to 25 bar. Version options include a plastic horn antenna (ø80mm), thread with integrated horn antenna, flange with encapsulated antenna system, or hygienic fitting with encapsulated antenna system, with wetted parts available in PFA, PTFE, 316L, Alloy C22, or PEEK.

Hygienic connection options include Clamp (≥2″, DN50), Slotted nut (≥2″, DN50), DRD connection, and NEUMO BioControl D50 PN16/316L fittings, making the sensor well suited to sanitary process applications. The innovative PLICSCOM display and adjustment module mounts directly on the sensor for measured value indication, adjustment, and diagnostics, with an optional Bluetooth feature allowing wireless adjustment of any transmitter from a distance of approximately 25 meters via the VEGA Tools App.
