Brand:

ABB Endura AZ40 Oxygen and Carbon Monoxide Analyzer

Description

Overview

The ABB Endura AZ40 is a close-coupled combustion analyzer that measures oxygen (O2) and carbon monoxide equivalent (COe) in a single system, giving operators the information needed to optimize combustion efficiency, detect burner malfunctions and improve plant safety. The close-coupled sample system keeps the sample at stable temperature and pressure for repeatable readings, with an integral flame arrestor that prevents flash-back if combustible levels exceed the lower explosive limit during startup, shutdown or process disturbance.

Engineering and Design

The AZ40 measures O2 with a response time to 63% of span of less than 3.5 seconds and COe in less than 13 seconds, with a COe range up to 20,000 ppm. Display accuracy is +/-2.5% of reading or +/-0.5% O2 for oxygen, and +/-20 ppm or +/-2% of selected span for COe up to 999 ppm. The sample path is maintained at high temperature to prevent acid-gas condensation and corrosion, and the system handles process temperatures from a minimum of 260 C (500 F) to a maximum of 1,649 C (3,000 F).

The analyzer supports thermocouple temperature input types B, E, J, K, N, R, S and T, and provides six normally-closed relay outputs plus two internal solenoid valves for AutoCal. Probe connections include RS485 communication and 115/230 V AC power, while the transmitter is rated IP66 / NEMA 4X with the probe rated IP55 / NEMA 4. Configuration, trending and firmware updates are handled through the onboard SD card

Technical Overview

The ABB Endura AZ40 is a combustion gas analyzer that measures both oxygen (O2) and carbon monoxide equivalent (COe) from a single probe assembly. Per ABB’s official datasheet, the O2 measurement uses the industry-standard zirconium oxide (zirconia) electrochemical cell, while the COe measurement uses a high-sensitivity catalytic sensor with metered dilution air added ahead of the sensor to ensure an adequate oxygen supply for accurate readings even during abnormal, low-oxygen combustion conditions. The O2 measurement range is adjustable from a minimum span of 0–5% up to a maximum span of 0–25%, with accuracy of ±2.5% of reading or ±0.5% O2 (whichever is greater) and a response time under 3.5 seconds to 63% of span. The COe measurement range is adjustable from a minimum span of 0–500 ppm up to a maximum of 0–20,000 ppm (2.00%), with accuracy of ±20 ppm or ±2% of span (whichever is greater) in the 200–999 ppm range, and ±400 ppm or ±2% of span in the 1,000–20,000 ppm range, with a response time under 13 seconds to 63% of span.

The AZ40 is rated for process temperatures from −46°C to +1,371°C (−50°F to +2,500°F), and provides 4 isolated analog outputs (0–22 mA, programmable), 6 digital relay outputs (normally closed, rated 2 A at 230 VAC), 4 digital inputs (volt-free contacts), Modbus communication, and SD-card data logging for trend recording and diagnostics. The unit includes integral flame arrestors, a heated sample path, and automatic sensor calibration to maintain measurement accuracy with minimal manual intervention. Seven Star LLC notes that the manufacturer’s datasheet confirms CE marking and cFMus certification for ordinary (non-hazardous) locations; ATEX/IECEx hazardous-area certification status for this specific model was not confirmed during this review, and customers requiring a certified hazardous-area variant should confirm availability directly with Seven Star LLC before ordering.

Applications

The AZ40 is used for continuous combustion and flue gas monitoring to determine excess oxygen levels, identify burner malfunctions, improve combustion efficiency, and enhance plant safety in boilers and furnaces across power generation, refining, and industrial process heating applications.
