Siemens SITRANS FM MAG 5100W Electromagnetic Flow Sensor
Overview
The Siemens SITRANS FM MAG 5100W is an electromagnetic flow sensor purpose-built for water and wastewater applications, including groundwater abstraction, drinking water distribution, wastewater treatment, sewage, and sludge handling. Available across an exceptionally wide size range from 0.5 inches (DN 15) up to 78 inches (DN 2000), the MAG 5100W pairs with a locally or remotely mounted SITRANS MAG5000 or MAG6000 flow transmitter to form a complete, high-accuracy flow measurement system.
Seven Star LLC supplies the Siemens SITRANS FM MAG 5100W as an authorized partner of Siemens, supporting water utilities, wastewater treatment operators, and industrial water users across Muscat, Sohar, Salalah, and the wider Sultanate of Oman. Genuine Siemens flow sensors, transmitters, and accessories are available through Seven Star LLC for new water infrastructure projects and metering upgrades throughout the GCC.
Measurement and Operating Principle
The MAG 5100W operates on Faraday’s law of electromagnetic induction: as conductive liquid flows through the sensor’s magnetic field, a voltage is induced across the flow that is directly proportional to the fluid’s velocity. This voltage is detected by Hastelloy C-276 integrated grounding and measuring electrodes and passed to the connected MAG5000 or MAG6000 transmitter, which converts the signal into a calibrated flow rate output with accuracy of 0.2% ±2.5mm/sec.
The sensor’s coned liner design improves low-flow accuracy, making it particularly effective for water leak detection applications where small flow changes must be reliably captured. Independent testing by Force Certification confirms the MAG 5100W maintains 0.8% accuracy even in zero-diameter upstream and downstream straight-run pipe installations, allowing flexible placement in constrained retrofit piping layouts without dedicated straight-run allowances.
Engineering Design of the Siemens MAG 5100W
The MAG 5100W features an epoxy-coated carbon steel body with a NEMA 4X/6/IP67-rated steel sensor housing, giving it a corrosion-resistant, rugged construction suitable for direct burial, with the optional IP68/NEMA 6P version (10 m water column, continuous) specified wherever the sensor will be permanently submerged or subject to constant flooding – conditions commonly encountered in buried water distribution networks and submerged wastewater applications. Liner material options include EPDM, suitable for drinking water applications, and NBR for general water and wastewater service, allowing the sensor to be matched to the specific water quality and regulatory requirements of the installation.
Nominal pressure follows the selected flange standard — EN 1092-1 PN 10/16/40, ANSI B16.5 Class 150 lb, or JIS B 2220 K10 — with operating pressures reaching 40 bar (580 psi) on DN 15–40 sensors and 16 bar (232 psi) across the larger DN 65–1200 range, so the sensor can be specified directly against the rating of the main it is cut into. Media temperatures from 14°F to 158°F (−10°C to 70°C) cover the majority of municipal and industrial water applications. When configured for remote mounting, the MAG 5100W requires an interconnecting shielded electrode cable and a NEMA 4X wall-mount polyamide junction box to link the sensor to its MAG5000 or MAG6000 transmitter, allowing the transmitter to be installed in a more accessible location away from submerged or buried sensor positions. Custody transfer, drinking water, and FM hazardous area non-incendive approvals are available depending on configuration.

Industrial Applications
The MAG 5100W is deployed across water abstraction, water and wastewater treatment plants, water distribution and leak detection networks, custody transfer water metering, irrigation systems, filtration plants, and general industrial water applications. Its wide size range and burial-rated construction make it especially suited to municipal water utility infrastructure, where sensors must operate reliably underground for years with minimal maintenance access.
Across Oman’s water and wastewater sector, from municipal supply networks to industrial water treatment facilities in Sohar and Salalah, Seven Star LLC supports water utilities and EPC contractors specifying the Siemens MAG 5100W for new metering infrastructure and aging-meter replacement programs. As an authorized Siemens partner, Seven Star LLC provides genuine sensors, MAG5000/6000 transmitters, and full system design support across Muscat and the wider GCC.

Sizing, Conductivity and Installation Requirements
The Siemens SITRANS FM MAG 5100W measures liquids with an electrical conductivity of 5 µS/cm or greater, which covers groundwater, potable supply, treated effluent, and the great majority of municipal and industrial water streams. Its calibrated span runs from a minimum range of 0 to 0.25 m/s up to a maximum of 0 to 10 m/s, and Siemens recommends selecting the nominal size so that normal operating flow falls between 1 and 3 m/s. Sizing to that band keeps the sensor where its signal-to-noise ratio is strongest and limits liner and electrode wear from the abrasive solids carried in sewage and sludge duty. Every sensor is wet-calibrated before dispatch at the zero point and at two points each near 25 % and 90 % of range.
The measuring pipe is AISI 304 (1.4301) stainless steel carrying the selected NBR, ebonite, or EPDM liner, the flanges and housing are carbon steel to ASTM A 105 with a corrosion-resistant coating, and the terminal box is glass-fibre-reinforced polyamide. In the remote configuration, sensor-to-transmitter runs of up to 500 m are supported with the correct Siemens cable type, which is precisely what allows a buried or submerged sensor to report to a transmitter mounted in an accessible above-ground kiosk. Ambient temperature at the sensor may range from −40 °C to +70 °C.
Approvals and Regional Specification Support
Custody transfer approval is granted under MI-001 for cold water across nominal sizes DN 50 to DN 1200, and Siemens publishes a meter uncertainty of ±0.25 % ±1 mm/s for MI-001 verified units. Drinking water approvals available on the EPDM liner include WRAS, NSF/ANSI Standard 61, ACS, and Kiwa, which matters directly on Omani potable distribution projects where the specification demands internationally recognised wetted-material certification. Hazardous-area variants carry FM non-incendive approval for Class I Division 2 Groups A, B, C, D and Class I Zone 2 Group IIC. Seven Star LLC confirms the exact approval set against the ordered article number before quotation, so no project is committed to a configuration its regulator or water authority will not accept.
