Yokogawa VY Series Vortex Flowmeter
Overview
The Yokogawa VY Series vortex flowmeter is Yokogawa’s latest-generation vortex meter, built on the proven shedder-bar measuring technology of the digitalYEWFLO platform and enhanced with updated digital electronics for improved diagnostics and communication. The VY Series measures liquid, gas, and steam flow by detecting the frequency of vortices shed downstream of a bluff body, a principle with no moving parts to wear and no calibration drift over time, making it a dependable choice wherever plants need a single meter technology across multiple fluid types.
As the official authorized partner and exclusive regional representative for Yokogawa, Seven Star LLC proudly supplies the VY Series vortex flowmeter to process plants, utilities, and industrial facilities throughout the Sultanate of Oman and the wider GCC. Every unit ships with full manufacturer warranty and the regional calibration and technical support that keeps flow measurement loops running accurately.
Measurement Principle
The Yokogawa VY Series operates on the Karman vortex shedding principle: as fluid flows past a bluff body (shedder bar) positioned in the flow path, alternating vortices are shed downstream at a frequency directly proportional to flow velocity. A piezoelectric sensor detects these vortices, and the transmitter’s Spectral Signal Processing (SSP) algorithm isolates the true vortex frequency from pipeline vibration and process noise, eliminating the need for manual startup adjustment even under fluctuating flow conditions.
Because vortex shedding frequency depends only on flow velocity and pipe geometry, not on fluid density, viscosity, or conductivity, the VY Series measures liquids, gases, and saturated or superheated steam with a single sensor design. The absence of moving parts means no wear-related recalibration, and built-in steam tables allow the transmitter to calculate mass flow of steam directly without external computation.
Engineering Design of the Yokogawa VY Series
The Yokogawa VY Series is rated for process temperatures from -29 to 250°C in the general type — with high-temperature (to 450°C) and cryogenic (to -196°C) variants available — and process pressures up to ASME Class 1500, with wetted parts available in stainless steel or nickel alloy for corrosive or high-temperature service. The meter body integrates a replaceable shedder bar for straightforward field maintenance, and both integral and remote electronics housing configurations are available to suit installation constraints such as high-vibration piping or limited access.
Communication options include HART7 with analog output for direct integration into existing 4-20 mA control loops, alongside advanced self-diagnostics that continuously monitor for abnormal flow, high pipeline vibration, and sensor faults. The transmitter’s low power consumption and SIL2 functional-safety certification make the VY Series suitable for both standard process monitoring and safety-instrumented system duty.
Key Features
The Yokogawa VY Series combines rugged vortex measurement with modern diagnostics and safety certification:
- High accuracy of ±0.75% of reading for liquids and ±1% of reading for gas and steam applications.
- Spectral Signal Processing (SSP) delivers stable readings under pipeline vibration without manual adjustment.
- No moving parts in the measuring element, eliminating wear-related recalibration over the meter’s service life.
- Process temperature rating of -29 to 250°C on the general type and pressure rating up to ASME Class 1500.
- Wetted parts available in stainless steel or nickel alloy for corrosive and high-temperature service.
- Built-in steam tables enable direct mass flow calculation of saturated and superheated steam.
- Advanced self-diagnostics predict and identify process anomalies before they affect measurement accuracy.
- SIL2 functional-safety certification supports use in safety instrumented systems.
Industrial Applications
The Yokogawa VY Series vortex flowmeter is widely used across oil and gas processing, power generation, chemical manufacturing, and utility steam distribution, wherever a single, low-maintenance meter technology needs to cover liquid, gas, and steam service. In Oman’s power and desalination plants, the VY Series is frequently specified for steam flow metering on boiler and process steam lines where its built-in steam tables simplify commissioning and eliminate the need for separate flow computers.
As the officially authorized partner for Yokogawa, Seven Star LLC distributes the VY Series to district cooling plants, refineries, and industrial utilities across Muscat and the Sohar and Salalah economic zones. Its SIL2 safety certification and wide temperature range also make it a strong fit for custody-transfer and safety-instrumented steam and gas metering applications across the broader GCC energy and process sector.

Sizes, Materials and Process Ratings
The Yokogawa VY Series is offered in nominal sizes from VY015 (½ in / DN15) through VY400 (16 in / DN400), across flange standards ASME Class 150 to 1500, EN PN10 to PN40 and JIS 10K to 40K, so a single meter family can be specified for both small utility lines and main process headers. Body materials are stainless steel CF8M or nickel alloy CW-12MW/N10276, and the shedder bar is supplied in duplex stainless steel S31803, CF8M or nickel alloy N10276 according to process temperature and corrosivity, with NACE MR0103 and MR0175 compliant material options available for sour service.
Three process temperature variants are available: a general type rated -29 to 250°C, a high-temperature type rated to 450°C, and a cryogenic type reaching -196°C, each with an ambient rating of -40 to 85°C (-50°C with the low-ambient option). Repeatability is ±0.2% of reading, the transmitter housing is rated IP66/IP67 to IEC 60529 and Type 4X, and hazardous-area versions are certified flameproof (Ex db) or intrinsically safe (Ex ia) under IECEx, ATEX, FM and FMc.
Outputs, Diagnostics and Commissioning
Beyond the 4-20 mA HART 7 loop, the VY Series provides an open-drain transistor output configurable as a scaled pulse to 10 kHz, an alarm or a status contact, plus a passive 4-20 mA analogue input for external temperature, pressure or density compensation. Using the integral Pt1000 element or that analogue input, the multivariable version computes mass flow, normalised or standard volumetric flow and energy flow, applying IAPWS-IF97 enthalpy data for steam and water. A selectable damping constant of 0 to 200 seconds and configurable up-scale or down-scale burnout complete the loop behaviour. Diagnostics are reported using NAMUR NE107 categories — Failure, Out of Specification, Function Check and Maintenance Required — so the Yokogawa VY Series drops directly into existing asset-management workflows, and the FSA130 verification tool allows waveform-level health checks without removing the meter from the line.
