Measurement Principle

The Yokogawa Rotamass TI measures mass flow directly using the Coriolis effect: process fluid flows through one or two vibrating measuring tubes, and the Coriolis force generated by the moving mass causes a phase shift between the inlet and outlet legs of the tube that is directly proportional to mass flow rate. Because the tube’s vibration frequency also shifts with the density of the fluid inside it, the same sensor simultaneously yields a true density measurement, and an integrated RTD provides process temperature, all without any separate instrumentation.

This direct-measurement principle means the Rotamass TI requires no straight-run piping, introduces no moving parts subject to wear, and is immune to variations in fluid viscosity, conductivity, or Reynolds number that affect other flow technologies. From these three primary measurements the transmitter calculates volume flow at operating or reference conditions, reference density, concentration of mixable or unmixable fluids, and, with additional input, viscosity or gas heating value.
