Polysoude P6 Smart Welding Station for Orbital TIG

Description

Overview

The Polysoude P6 is a mobile smart welding station built for mechanised orbital TIG welding of pipes, tubes and heavy prefabrication spools. Within the Polysoude range it is the high-output, three-phase platform: where the smaller stations focus on thin-wall tube, the Polysoude P6 is designed to drive open welding heads, wire-feeding orbital heads, tube-to-tubesheet heads and automated cells that need high current, arc voltage control (AVC) and torch oscillation (OSC). The manufacturer brochure describes it as robust and reliable, particularly well suited to prefabrication thanks to the sturdiness of its structure and its resistance to harsh environmental conditions.

Seven Star LLC supplies the Polysoude P6 to fabricators, EPC contractors and maintenance teams in Oman and across the GCC, with engineering support from Muscat. Typical buyers are pipe shops producing process spools for oil and gas, petrochemical and power projects, where repeatable, documented TIG root and fill passes are a contractual requirement rather than a nice-to-have.

Operating Principle of Orbital TIG with the Polysoude P6

In orbital TIG welding the tungsten electrode travels around a fixed pipe or tube while the power source controls current, travel speed, wire feed and, where fitted, torch height and weave. The Polysoude P6 runs the complete sequence as a stored welding programme divided into angular sectors, so current pulsing, rotation speed and wire speed can change as the torch moves from the flat to the vertical and overhead positions. The Polysoude P6 applies closed loop regulation of torch rotation and wire speed, which means the actual motor speed is measured and corrected rather than simply commanded. As a general welding principle, this is what allows an orbital system to reproduce the same bead profile weld after weld, independent of the operator’s hand skill.

Two process variants are offered. The cold wire version (P6-4 CW) feeds unheated filler wire into the pool and covers 5 to 300 A, constant or pulsed. The hot wire version (P6-4 HW) adds a separate hot wire current of 3 to 140 A that preheats the filler wire by resistance before it enters the pool; combined with a welding current of 5 to 520 A, this raises deposition so that thicker walls can be filled in fewer passes. On the hot wire version the brochure lists both AVC and OSC as standard motion controls, while on the cold wire version they are available as options.

Engineering Design of the Polysoude P6

The Polysoude P6 is housed in a rigid frame with forced-ventilation cooling for the power electronics. The cold wire station measures 630 x 470 x 795 mm and weighs 75 kg; with the multi-voltage option it grows to 630 x 470 x 970 mm and 115 kg. The hot wire station measures 1060 x 530 x 1145 mm and weighs 138 kg. Input is three-phase 400 V / 415 V at 50 / 60 Hz, with a multi-voltage kit from 200 V to 480 V available for the cold wire version, which is useful on sites where generator or local supply voltage differs from European standard. Protection class is IP 23S and insulation class F.

Torch cooling is integrated: the cold wire station includes two built-in closed loop water cooling systems with a flow safety valve (the second one optional), while the hot wire unit works with an external cooling system that has an internal flow safety valve. Operators program and run the system from a 10.4 inch quick release colour touchscreen or a wireless touchscreen controller using Plug and Play software, and a full function remote control with 4 or 6 axes allows programme selection at the joint. Welding heads from Polysoude are recognised automatically when connected, and a control kit is available for closed welding heads from other makers that are fitted with a tachometer.

Key Features

The main functions of the Polysoude P6 listed in the manufacturer documentation are summarised below.

  • Two current platforms: 5 to 300 A for the cold wire version and 5 to 520 A for the hot wire version, each constant or pulsed.
  • Welding current precision of plus or minus 1 A up to 100 A and plus or minus 1 percent above 100 A.
  • Built-in arc voltage control and torch oscillation control for heads that are equipped with AVC and OSC.
  • Real-time display and non-volatile recording of arc voltage, welding current, electrode angular position, welding speed and wire speed.
  • Four USB ports, LAN and WLAN connectivity, and a built-in printer or USB stick for archiving welding procedures and monitored data.
  • On-board OPC-UA server for secure data transfer to production software, remote start orders and real-time monitoring.
  • Welding gas control with a mass flowmeter, plus a backing gas kit as an option on the cold wire version.
  • Compatibility with peripheral equipment such as printers, barcode readers, oxygen meters and a DAQbox, and an interface for manipulators, positioners and column and boom systems.

Industrial Applications in Oman and the GCC

The Polysoude P6 targets workshops that weld carbon steel, stainless, duplex and nickel alloy process piping, where root quality and full traceability are inspected against project specifications. In the Sultanate of Oman that includes spool fabrication for upstream gas processing, refinery and petrochemical expansions in Sohar and Duqm, and power and desalination plants where alloy piping and heat exchangers are welded to tight procedure qualifications. The hot wire variant suits heavier wall sections and cladding-related work, where the higher deposition of a hot wire process shortens arc time per joint.

Because the station is compatible with Polysoude open heads, closed heads, tube-to-tubesheet heads such as the TS series, the Polycar carriage and Polyfil wire feeders, one Polysoude P6 can serve several cells in a fabrication yard. Seven Star LLC supplies the station, matching heads and accessories to contractors in Muscat, Sohar, Salalah and the wider GCC, and helps buyers align the configuration with their welding procedure specifications. For manual and semi-automatic work alongside the orbital line, buyers often compare power sources such as the Lincoln Electric Power Wave S500 and the ESAB Rebel EMP 285ic; more orbital equipment is listed under orbital pipe welding systems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between the Polysoude P6-4 CW and P6-4 HW?
The CW version is a cold wire TIG station with a 5 to 300 A welding range, offered with 4 or 6 axes. The HW version adds a 3 to 140 A hot wire circuit and raises the welding range to 5 to 520 A, with arc voltage control and torch oscillation listed as standard motion controls.
Which welding heads can the Polysoude P6 drive?
According to the brochure the Polysoude P6 is compatible with all Polysoude welding heads, including open heads, closed heads, tube-to-tubesheet heads and the Polycar carriage, and it recognises Polysoude heads automatically. A control kit allows closed heads from other makers with a tachometer to be used.
What power supply does the Polysoude P6 need?
It runs on three-phase 400 V or 415 V at 50 or 60 Hz. For the cold wire version a multi-voltage kit covering 200 V to 480 V is available, which helps on sites with different supply voltages.
