Weld Cleaning & Passivation

Weld cleaning and passivation equipment restores the corrosion resistance of stainless steel welds after fabrication. Welding leaves heat tint, oxides and sometimes iron contamination that break the thin chromium oxide layer on stainless, so welded joints can rust or corrode in service unless cleaned. This matters for food, pharmaceutical, desalination, chemical and offshore equipment in Oman and the GCC, where chloride-rich air and seawater are common.

The usual methods are electrochemical weld cleaning, where a conductive brush and cleaning fluid remove heat tint using a low-voltage power source and can also mark or etch the surface; chemical pickling paste or gel, which dissolves the damaged layer; and passivation solutions, often nitric or citric acid based, that help the passive film rebuild. Mechanical cleaning with stainless-dedicated brushes and abrasives is also used before the final treatment. Standards such as ASTM A380 and A967 describe cleaning and passivation practice for stainless parts.

Seven Star LLC supplies cleaning and passivation equipment and consumables for industrial users. They pair with stainless steel filler metals and duplex and nickel alloy filler metals, and with TIG welding machines and orbital pipe welding systems that produce the welds. Handle chemicals with correct personal protection and disposal. See all welding accessories and safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why clean welds on stainless steel?
Heat tint and contamination damage the passive layer, reducing corrosion resistance. Cleaning restores it.
What is electrochemical weld cleaning?
A brush and cleaning fluid with a low-voltage power source remove heat tint from the weld area without heavy abrasion.
What is the difference between pickling and passivation?
Pickling removes the damaged surface layer with acid, while passivation helps form a fresh, protective oxide film.
Which standards describe passivation?
ASTM A380 and A967 are commonly referenced for cleaning and passivation of stainless steel parts.
Are there safety precautions?
Yes, acids and fluids require gloves, eye protection, ventilation and correct disposal following the safety data sheet.
