LongTeng EL8 Carbon Steel Submerged Arc Welding Wire Supplied by Seven Star LLC

Submerged Arc Welding Wire

Submerged arc welding (SAW) wire feeds into an arc buried beneath a blanket of granular flux, delivering very high deposition rates, deep penetration and consistently clean welds with little spark or fume. It is the standard process for longitudinal and circumferential seams on pressure vessels, storage tanks, wind-tower sections, line pipe and structural beams made in workshops and fabrication yards. In Oman and the GCC it is widely used on heavy plate for oil, gas, power and desalination equipment.

Wire and flux act as a pair. Classifications under AWS A5.17 for carbon steel include EL8, EM12K, EM13K and EH14, where the letter and number describe manganese level and the K indicates silicon-killed. Higher-manganese wires such as EH14 give greater strength in multi-pass welds, while EM12K is a general-purpose choice. Wire diameters from 2.4 to 4.0 mm are typical, and tandem arc set-ups raise productivity further.

Seven Star LLC supplies SAW wire from LongTeng and Lincoln Electric, with advice on wire and flux pairing. Choose compatible submerged arc fluxes, and compare flux-cored welding wire for site work. Heavy plate may also call for induction heating and preheating equipment. The wider range is under welding consumables.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is submerged arc welding wire used for?
It is used with granular flux for high-deposition welding of thick plate, typically on pressure vessels, tanks, pipe and structural beams in a workshop.
What do EL8, EM12K and EH14 mean?
These are AWS A5.17 carbon steel wire classes. E means electrode, the L, M or H describes low, medium or high manganese, the number is the nominal carbon content, and K means silicon-killed.
Do I have to match wire and flux?
Yes. The wire and flux combination determines the weld metal properties, so use a pairing recommended by the manufacturer and your procedure.
Can submerged arc welding be done on site?
It mostly suits flat or horizontal positions on workshop fixtures or rotators, so it is mainly a fabrication shop process rather than site work.
What wire diameter is typical?
Common diameters range from 2.4 to 4.0 mm, selected by joint design, current and the desired deposition rate.
