Electrode Drying Ovens

Electrode drying ovens, also called electrode holding or baking ovens, keep welding electrodes and fluxes dry so that low-hydrogen welds stay free of hydrogen-induced cracking. Low-hydrogen stick electrodes such as E7018 and E7016 have coatings that absorb atmospheric moisture, which is especially relevant in the humid coastal conditions of Oman and the GCC. Moisture introduced into the arc becomes hydrogen in the weld metal, raising the risk of cracks in thick, restrained or high-strength steels.

Procedures normally call for re-drying exposed electrodes at the temperature and time stated by the manufacturer, then holding them at a lower temperature in a heated oven until use. Portable quivers keep electrodes warm at the workface. Ovens range from small portable units for site use to large cabinets for fabrication shops, with temperature controls up to several hundred degrees Celsius. Capacity, maximum temperature, controller accuracy and mobility are the main selection factors. Do not oven-dry cellulosic electrodes, which need their moisture.

Seven Star LLC supplies ovens for industrial users. They protect welding electrodes, support alloy work with low alloy and chrome-moly filler metals, and can also be used to dry submerged arc fluxes if the oven is rated for it. Use with stick (MMA) welding machines on site. The full group is under welding accessories and safety.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why dry welding electrodes?
Moisture in the coating adds hydrogen to the weld, which can cause cracking in susceptible steels. Drying prevents that.
What is the difference between drying and holding?
Drying (baking) removes absorbed moisture at a higher temperature. Holding keeps dried electrodes warm until use at a lower temperature.
Which electrodes need an oven?
Low-hydrogen types such as E7018 and E7016. Cellulosic electrodes should not be oven-dried.
What temperature should I use?
Use the temperature and time on the electrode manufacturer data sheet or your welding procedure.
Can ovens dry submerged arc flux?
Some ovens can, but check the maximum temperature and capacity for the flux type.
