The CPU module CU88A is responsible for the recording and archiving of process information, control of the input/output modules, operation of the communication interfaces and the processing of internal control and regulation programs. The module has a 10/100 Ethernet connection and four serial interfaces. The connection to the modules in the system frame is made via the parallel system bus. Data can be exchanged with coprocessor and network modules designed for this purpose via an additional serial bus (synchronous, HDLC). The module consists of two boards plugged onto one another: The base board contains all operating and display elements, the network, communication and parameterization/diagnosis interfaces, a static RAM (SRAM) buffered with a maintenance-free GoldCap, a real-time clock also buffered with a Goldcap, the watchdog logic (WDT) and the connection to the system bus 850. The plug-in board contains the processor core with an MPC8247 PowerPC, the flash and SDRAM memory, a high-precision quartz oscillator and the complete other functional logic.
