Solenoid Valve – Alco 240RA Series (Refrigerant, 2-Way NC)

Description

Overview

The Alco 240RA series is a proven refrigerant shut-off solution designed to minimize pressure drop and speed up installation. Extended ODF ends allow quick brazing without disassembling the valve body. The PTFE diaphragm withstands higher temperatures, and models are available with manual stem (certain sizes) for service overrides. Typical operating envelope includes MOPD up to ~300 psig and max fluid temperature up to ~250–285 °F (model-dependent). The coil platform covers common AC/DC voltages and uses quick retention hardware for fast swaps.

Key Features

• 2-way, normally-closed diaphragm solenoid valve for liquid/suction/hot-gas lines.

Brazed-in installation; extended ends, no body disassembly.

PTFE diaphragm for high-temperature duty; stainless enclosing tube.

Shared coil family across sizes; multiple voltages available (see ESC/coil docs).

MOPD up to 300 psig, max fluid temp ~250–285 °F (by model).

Manual stem options on select sizes (e.g., 240RA20).

Typical Applications

• Supermarket refrigeration racks (liquid line shut-off, hot-gas defrost)

• Industrial chillers, process cooling, cold rooms

• Suction line or hot-gas bypass control in HVAC/R systems

Selection & Sizing Notes

• Choose line size/ODF to match pipe; verify MOPD vs. system ΔP.

• Pick coil voltage & frequency from the coil selection sheet.

• If you require manual service override, choose a manual-stem variant.

Installation & Commissioning

• Braze with the valve assembled (per spec) using heat-sink and nitrogen purge; avoid overheating coil/enclosing tube.

• Mount the enclosing tube roughly vertical up (±90° recommendation) for best reliability.

• After install, leak-test, energize coil, and confirm flow/close function under actual ΔP.

Compliance / Notes

• Refer to latest Copeland/Copeland-Alco documentation; certain sizes/variants carry UL/cUL (file MP604) and PED markings as applicable. Coils sold separately.

FAQ

Q1: Is 240RA pilot-operated or diaphragm?

A: It’s specified as a 2-way, normally-closed diaphragm valve for refrigerant service.

Q2: Which services does it cover?

A: Liquid line, suction line, and hot-gas applications (model-dependent).

Q3: Do I need to remove parts before brazing?

A: No—brazing without disassembly is a listed feature of the 240RA design.

Q4: What about coil voltages?

A: A shared coil family supports multiple voltages; select per your panel’s supply (see ESC/coil tech info).

Q5: What’s the max operating range?

A: MOPD up to ~300 psig and max fluid temp ~250–285 °F (check your exact model’s datasheet).

About brand
Copeland—an Emerson brand—is a global leader in HVACR compression technology, trusted for supermarkets, cold rooms, process cooling, and transport refrigeration. The portfolio spans semi-hermetic reciprocating compressors (D-/3D/4D/6D families), scroll compressors, and complete condensing units engineered for high efficiency, long service life, and easy serviceability. Semi-hermetic models such as the D-series (e.g., D3…/D4…/D6…) feature robust valve-plate/discus designs, wide operating envelopes for LBP/MBP/HBP applications, integrated motor protection, crankcase heaters, and oil-management options—making them ideal replacements or upgrades in legacy racks and new builds alike. Copeland supports common refrigerants used in commercial refrigeration (R404A, R407F, R448A/R449A, R134a, and selected low-GWP alternatives), helping end users meet efficiency and compliance targets while maintaining reliable pull-down in hot climates.Emerson provides flow computers, valves, transmitters, and process control technologies that power custody transfer, automation, and measurement systems across energy and industrial sectors.
